people 100 years from now will look back at our time and think how primitive we are. While some don't like the EU, at least a move towards world government helps prevent conflict. After thousands of years of wars in europe it's hard to see ourselves in combat with the likes of France and Germany any time soon. Hopefully this will continue to grow until all conflict is eradicated.

    That would be nice. :)

We didn't have to go to war in 1939. There would have been a lot less conflict if we hadn't, and it would have been a step towards world government (or at least a single European government).

If there is no means of opposing world government then there is no protection from world government.

    I think he wins..sorry Gen.:)
However, if you had been just a random member of the population back then you are definately richer in all ways.

The queen is still Duke of Normandy BTW because part of Normandy is not in France - the channel Islands and she inherited that title (seriously she is the Duke not the duchess so what is Prince Philip).

You can be both - my brothers are

You can. I am "on the cusp" of the two though I'd say my own circumstances are more Gen X than Boomer as I never benefitted from cheap housing - whereas my brother who is a Gen Xer did as he bought later in the 90s lull. The dates are a bit arbitrary. However Gen is much younger so not a boomer.

I'm enjoying this conversation. It's been a while since I was called 'much younger'!

It certainly would have been a step towards world government, although there would have been only one candidate for President....

I bet he had more mistresses though... But then again he was more likely to get syphilis!

    Why ?

There is no written evidence of syphilis in Europe before the the 15th century.

There is very weak evidence of syphilis in European skeletons pre Columbus - whilst there is plenty of evidence in south american skeletons.

Does that include Yaws? I often wonder if that was where the weak evidence of syphilis in European skeletons that exists comes from.

I am cleaner and probably more comfortable. I'm almost certainly in better health than he was at 40 and certainly have better access to healthcare. I have (mis)information at my fingertips thanks to 24 hour news, Fox(Sky) Sports and the Internet.

    So, who is richer.

Is this a sort of proxy for proponents of "trickle down economics", where it doesn't matter how wide inequality grows in our society as long as the lower orders have the riches of McDonalds, Sky and mobile phones ?

In the 18th and 19th Century many Christians argued that slaves were "better off spiritually, morally and materially in Virginia by being delivered from a pagan and debauched lifestyle".

"Our slaves generally ate more meat, wore more and better clothing, and lived in better houses, than their fathers did".

Were they richer than a 12th Century peasant from West Africa ?

I thought syphilis was a mutation from Yaws and it is possible that this mutation occurred in the New World and was transmitted to Europe.
