I thought syphilis was a mutation from Yaws and it is possible that this mutation occurred in the New World and was transmitted to Europe.

They are very closely related but if you are looking at skeletal damage from over 5 centuries ago are you going to be able to tell the difference? Also possibly reduced immunity may have lead bejel to present similar symptoms. Just idle curiosity and thank Flemming we don't have to worry quite as much about that group of diseases.

Late loss of baby teeth is actually a genetic anomaly and can cause Malocclusion.

Wikipedia reckons it's the other way around, and that early loss of milk teeth is more problematic.

The dreaded "N" word hasn't been mentioned.

my previous point wasn't a dig.

Misconceptions abound about medieval time. Men and women were pretty close in height to those in 1984 (about 1 inch shorter).
This tells us that mortality wasn't about nutrition but about infectious diseases. Life expectancy was short because 25% of people died at birth (or in first year).

Neither would someone aged 60 be exceptional - as once you got to 40, you could expect to live to 60 with fair luck (Richards mum made 67 years)

We can easily combat infectious diseases and we can prolong geriatric life these days but then again many modern diseases would be almost unknown (assorted cancers / diabetes etc).

Richard I life lived would be a tad interesting.

    .

I always think back to the ''three score and ten'' being considered a fair allotment, no other problems arising. Its not a new book afterall.

DH hates this being my reasoning because I've had us at ''middle aged'' since we were about 28.

its all in the mind. I consider myself younger than I am - particularly when my wife is telling me to grow up.

Middle age is 50 plus to me.

I only mentioned it because we're fringing on the subject.

I think there should be an anti-Godwin's law, which states that any mention of Godwin's law temporarily limits the increase in probability of a reference, due to the fact that everyone purposefully stays away from the subject for a short time.
