Spirit, the question I'd ask is, what have you to lose?

All suggestions given are extremely valid, & I concur.
Would you pick your own team? Viva has answered that more succinctly than I.

You clearly have a very supportive family. Would you have equal support from senior management too?

Think of your health, as people have mentioned. Also, consider the time you'll be putting in. Will it be worth it to sacrifice that time from family, hobbies, interests etc?
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

    Dear all

Thanks for your input,I have read up to last night but not able to respond tonight as a bit strung out.

Had a two horrid (for me) things today.

The GP and practice nurse did a good job of getting me to inject myself (despite me still not having cracked open the demo pen envelope) and I have to do it for real on my own tonight:( Between them they spent about an hour and a half with me which was extraprdinary. I am grateful in a miserable way.

Then I had a meeting about the 'project' and the news had got out that I was to be SRO so I found a whole heap of unmet expectations came my way. I managed a measured response that it was all a bit premature but came away with the monkey on my shoulder.

We almost have to invite guests to put shoes on when they come in here.

    What LIR said :)
You don't have to enjoy it (in fact probably best if you don't), but after the first few times hopefully it will be a little less

Spirit :) You can do it.

On a good note. I had a student practise an exam talk yesterday and he was a mess. Today, he had improved immeasurably. I am so proud of them.

    Thank you.

I did it about 10 minutes ago. I got the pen loaded with the needle and left it for a while, then really did back myself into a wall and injected into my tummy.

I could barely feel it. It is the thought of it that is so awful. I will just get on with it because I have to. I am very pragmatic but the whole idea of it is an anthema at the moment.

The other bit is that I am now legally required to test my blood sugars everytime before I drive. I am not even sure what I am supposed to be looking for or what to do if I find 'it'. Woefully ill equipped for the inconvenience of long term conditions. It si just not how I 'see myself'.

    Me again

I was well controlled with a tablet - for years. However I had a having side effect which came to light and to a head after
    1. At a pre op assessment I was judged unfit for surgery. I was subsequently OK but puzzled by this.
    2. When presenting in a lecture theatre I came off the stage to find an A&E Consultant and someone who had been leading an advanced life support course in an adjoining teaching room waiting to escort me to ED. A couple of clinicians had seen me and did not like the look of me. I spent the whole day and late into the evening being assessed. I was OK for me then too, I just had symptoms that looked scary to the trained eye.
My history alarms people- family and colleagues in particular so having tablets that make me short of breath and gives respiratory acidosis is no go. I have tried other medications but the control is not working and I gained weight.

For now ex hubby, it was to check his blood sugars were suffiently high enough to be safe to drive for the next hour or so. For him (and it will be different for others as he also had another condition which had an impact on how his blood sugars worked), if he was registering between 8 and 10, he was ok, any lower and he had to have something to bring it up.

But, I have to say it again...what was safe for him, may not be safe for you as he had other things going on. If you have a consultant, or specialist nurse, it may be a good idea to ask the question direct to them.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.
