    .

I could do with some new shirts too. You have to wear white to work these days and some of them are looking a bit, well, off white.

The golden rule is that white things only ever, ever get washed with other white things and that means that once anything has strayed out of the white zone it is contaminated and never allowed in a white wash again. Keeps whites white for years and means shirts last until the collars start fraying.

OH often wears cuff-links but no tie.

I have an AMEX (or at least OH does, but what's his is mine). This £5 off local shops is mad. 2 shops wouldn't take it, even though they are on the website as accepting Amex and the 2 I've managed to get £5 off are the dentist and RAC.

You don't need to register with 4-square to get the small retail discount, its set up to encourage you to do so, but works just as well if you don't.ius.

Big benefit of Amex (assuming you have the right card) is the 2-4-1 offer on flights with a companion voucher issued when you have spent a certain amount on the card. Matches whatever flight you "buy" with Avios (air miles in old money). Friends have just flown first class to Sydney and others have gone business class to Mauritius.

    Are you Nick Leeson?

Ha ha, no! In some ways I am the anti-Leeson!

The past 4.5 years may have been hard but I'm sure you have learned so much since then and experienced great things you may not have done.

Life can be a meandering river and you may look back on it as some of the best times of your life.

I have learned a lot, mostly 101 things to do with an onion and some discount mince.

Seriously I have taken a lot from the last few years. I've got to know myself and my kids much better than if I sailed on calm seas and I've gotten a much better handle on what I do and don't want from life.

Leeson is of course from that ubiquitous county of Hertfordshire... Though whether or not he's a nice person, well that's a different question.

I've seen him interviewed a few times over the last 6 months or so on the subject of the financial crisis and the latitude of banks and he comes across as someone who knows he's made mistakes but that has given him a very interesting insight on the markets and what should be done to change things.

FWIW I think "Leeson" as was is a character type who you find in all types of business, but particularly those with a pressurised and competitive environment. The challenge for the company is how to get the best out of them without their crossing the line. They need lots of motivation and a very short leash.

Mine wears cuff links no tie, because most of his smart casual shirts need cuff links but obviously would look wrong with a tie!

LIR, that's an incredibly kind thing to say.

I think there have been times when the community on these boards kept me sane, especially when we first got to Aus. You are a big part of this community. Thank you.

I haven't got this job yet, far from it but I'm pretty close. If I don't get it then I had an interview last week too which went very well too. Not bad for someone that isn't applying for jobs! That was for a really interesting job but probably not as well paid as this one and with skills that don't take me in such a good direction: I'd enjoy the next year more but the next 20 years less most likely.

You have always known I 'loff' you, we discussed it before.

I am only a big part of the community because I take more effort to keep sane than others!

Tbh, I don't think the job itself is 'all' that important....it's the mind space you are in and it sounds like you and your family are doing the right stuff for where you all needed to be.

That's great news lir. How far off having a workable living space are you now? So not the house done, but enough rooms that you don't need to go through another winter like the last one.

Sorry, I know I've asked a similar question before, but just trying to get my head round all the updates. I'm not very good at adding separate posts together to see the bigger picture.
