we fill in a form up to 30 days before they arrive and this year
    - the account was created but not sync-ed to the network (account active but no access to email etc so could log in but not use the internet)
    - the account was not created in time (account prepared before arrival)
    - the account had no privileges (can't print to any printer)
    - the account was suspended as the status was unknown (it's on the form!!)

I've only had 4 people start this year ;)

and my main supplier is giving me a load of grief this year :(, they're changing IT systems which means lots of suspensions and we've just run out of something that needs to be delivered by tomorrow. fingers crossed everyone!!
Sounds like the form needs a revisit .... and who is monitoring the helpdesk data to make sure these things are kept on top of.

Generally, a firm starts with defining user roles and accesses.... then staff/managers decide that Mr X also requires a one off piece of software, Ms Y needs two new pieces of software and access to somebody else's drive as they're helping with their job.... in fact, the problems come because people move around and end up needing one-off accesses to different drives. These should be handled by creating a new user definition/type, even if it's just for one person.... so that replicating that is a breeze.

Also, many firms are slapdash about SLAs and OLAs (how long you've got) and nobody knows them or monitors them .... so stuff lurks around.

:D if only the people who worked with us actually cared. I wouldn't mind but we also don't get VPN and remote desktopping, which is really annoying as they claim it's for security reasons but I've had the same access at other universities I've been at.

Anyways, enough whinging. I am sleepy, 2 hours of classes makes me tired.

Just ran the LL gauntlet.... sitting by the door, so I couldn't get past .... without being told I shouldn't drink my soda pop .... even though they'd never heard of the brand whatsoever and seemed confused when I informed them that the contents did not contain the item I was being 'lectured' about.

Totally fed up with every move I make, everything I buy, eat, drink etc etc ... and every minutae of my life being queried, questioned and disapproved of... grrrrrr.

    Not long now....

Every time I head for the door it's "where are you off to?" ... in that tone of voice your parents used when you were 14 and were reprimanding you and about to disallow it.

Thank you. I feel like I am playing at being a grown up. Hopefully no-one is going to find me out :D
I don't know about anyone else but I still feel like that.

I'm the same and I'm older than rocks! AND I've got a daughter who's moved out.

StevieJ and lj, just remembered the book I was going to recommend after seeing Stevie's suggestion; it's

    it's a pretty fine read!:)

To me, being an adult means being able to swing on swings at 3am without getting into trouble from a parent for staying out late :)

    Hurrah! Well done.

Now, a question, I notice that both nikkster and pn have started new jobs on a Monday. Is this by default? I have always tried to start new things on a Tuesday or Wednesday (if five day week) so I get enough of a flavour before a weekend, but without that first week spaced out by the end of it feeling. Is it me that's odd?

Dh still not heard back apart from that they have ruled all but him and one other person out. (the other person had not interviewed a second time at that point.). We are trying to work out if we can afford for him to take a short break between jobs. Even if it's a week it's something.

Agree- don't like starting new job on a Monday. I am starting my new job this Thursday, although I will just be moving up one floor and working in our "sister" department - so not really a totally new start. I will have to line manage three people though which is concerning. Managing people's work is easy enough but having to deal with their problems is a bit different. I hope they never have any problems!

This year I'm going to be 'adult' by taking the kids to a castle for Halloween. I'm working during the day, so my plan is (a last minute one, as usual!) to give myself scary hair and makeup before I collect the children. I never dress up for Halloween, ever, so hopefully they'll find it suitably weird.

I can look scary with my everyday hair and no makeup, mind! I was adult for a long time but I've allowed myself to give up, because it is more fun :)
