    So today I have
    1. Ironed for the first time in,ages
    2. Driven to work for the first time ever
    3. Driven back from work for the first time ever
    4. Oh, and had my first day at my first proper grown up job!!

Quite a lot of faces I recognise, and everyone seems very.friendly. Haven't done anything taxing today, but did get taken for lunch which was nice :) Pizza on the oven and bottle of ale open as a self-awarded celebratory treat. Here's hoping this is just the start of getting back on some kind of track, which I thought I had completely lost :)

Sounds like a great day! Well done Nikkster :)

One thing in this new job is that suddenly I don't have time to do things.

I've always said that if you work full-time Mon-Fri, you've only really Saturday morning to sort things out because many businesses are only open Mon-Fri and Saturday mornings..... Saturdays suddenly became my "find a new place to live" time - although it looks like that's sorted and I will be moving to the place I have spoken about.

If so, that then frees up Saturdays to try to organise a hair cut. Trouble is, hair cuts are expensive on Saturdays, so my lovely/cheap "model" find, which was £27 instead of £75, is now not an option as that's only Thu afternoons, which is a nuisance.

I also can't take days off.... while, on paper, I have annual leave, they close down over Xmas, wiping 7 annual leave days (minimum/not actually had the official count yet) off my allocation. Thing is, it'll take me until mid-January to have earnt that many.... so I can't really take any time off until February at the earliest probably.

Ah, now I took It as very sharp indeed. Seems I have a dark sense of humour :o

In the holiday flat, the utility room is off the bathroom.

It hardly qualifies as a room, open the door too far and you hit the sink. To the right is the washing machine with dryer on top. To the left is the sink, but you have to walk in the room and close the door to reach the sink. Straight ahead is a window with sliding panels and outside that is a dryer line that angles up and down so you can put clothes out on the furthest rungs without falling out of the window. There is only one place to stand in the room, spot centre. The whole room probably measures 3 foot x 6 foot.
Let's precis that ... you want me to have sympathy for your "not really a utility room" in your second home ... when I doubt I'll be able to afford a first home with one.

    Right ... I think I've got that.
    :)

3'x6' is larger than a lot of main/only shower rooms these days.

(our IT service is particularly rubbish!!)

I don't think I've ever worked anywhere where people have been especially complimentary about the IT setup.

:T :T You've made it on your first day of your proper job.

Do I get to nag you about the thesis yet? :p

Well I don't have access to a tv (though I did manage to find a way to watch Homeland, and I do really want my new job to keep me... (don't want to find out how optional the PhD is).

I did bring my lab books with me (and my PhD laptop) :o

That is a roundabout way of saying yes.

The problem with IT is usually that the management have decided how long before they have to set up a new user (say, 3-4 working days) - and the hiring manager doesn't [a] give them enough time give them the exact information needed to set up the new user.
