No kids..but quite willing to do a hand print painting myself LOL!!
one of my favourite present from my dd (given to me when she was 36!) was a painting she did - a poppy field, which she had framed, I love it!She isnt the least bit arty really, and I think the gift was sort of tongue in cheek, but actually the painting is very good and takes pride of place in my lounge alongside one by my dgd.
... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

regarding the ideas for getting older people an album full of photos and stuff.. a variation that you could do on that (although you'd have to start *soon*), is to run up a family tree for them, there are lots of places online that you can research their family history, kind of like "who do you think you are" that's on the TV at the moment. You can add photos of people if you have them, you can scan them into the computer and make little ovals next to their names, or copy the original photo and cut them out in an oval to stick next to the name. You can find out info about where people originally would have lived. I'm doing this for one of my grandmothers (the other one isn't interested in this kind of thing) and her family ultimately (a few generations back from her) comes from a very small village in norfolk, so i've found out information about the village, about what would have been there at the time, copied photos and so on - and i've done it all through the computer, can't afford to go there (we're in Manchester). If you're creative you can run up something really nice and get it framed. Its a totally unique present with lots of thought put into it. Its really only suitable for certain people (there are those that like this kinda thing and those that don't) but for the ones that are of this bent, I'm sure they'll love it.

This is a great idea Keth! I've been researching our family history for a long time so I have lots of information. never thought of gifting it like that. :j :j... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Really and truly!!! I like the family tree idea and like the memory book idea, which would involve spending quality time together...so will try and put the basics together and then spend some time each week filling in stories about his 13 brothers and sisters, childhood etc.
That however doesnt solve the problem of what to actually buy him! (my Mum is just as bad!!!)
EDIT: Was actually considering putting together a pack for my mum n dad and me as well for researching our family tree and a xmas present - i saw a thread on here or at leats on this board giving some suggestions of what to put in it...will have to have a better look. dads mad old cousin did one, but she is slightly barmy and hard to get straight answers out of about who we are related too! thought it could be a lovely hobby we all had together!

When was his 'heyday', you could do a 20's/30's/40's night in hamper, might take a bit of sourcing but could be fun for both of youThere's always memorabilia on Ebay, programmes/tickets/signs/music/films etc etc
