Preparing for winter IV

I do try to be as good as I can and I do really care about our earth and all the people and animals in it. Also the future generations.
I am not as clever as some on here and don't pretend to be but I so appreciate all the knowledge you all have. You all have given me so many ideas to protect as best as possible my family and neighbours in a SHTF episode and in all things general. We all have our beliefs and we are all entitled to believe what we want whilst listening to all sides of the arguments. Please, please don't let this side tracked. You are all lovely people on here. I may not join in as much as some but I read all the time and am so grateful for everyone's input. Thank you.0 -

There is, at the preschool I work at, we used to be in a portacabin with a ramp up to the front door - the manager's husband had used spare yacht paint on it to make it non slip, & by the time we needed to redo it, she'd retired & moved away, so we had to buy non-slip paint. It worked well having a colour that contrasted with the wood, so we could see when it was wearing thin & needing repainting before it got slippy.0 -
our decking became very slippery after being down for 3 years. We gave it a good scrub first with some stuff to get rid of the algae, then we rinsed and let it dry and used

it has been brilliant for two winters so far. I have matting on wooden steps after slipping and hurting myself. Got these mats and screwed them down. Not worth the risk of falling

a neighbour has already slipped on her decking and has put a rug down for now
I find the slate patio really dangerous after frost when it just looks wet and make myself go very slow and carefully0 -
Kittie my dad always grew turnips tatties kale and leeks. Plus he always made elderberry wine.
- that blew up in the pantry at 3am and gave my mother hysterics..was nearly as good as the time all my pet mice got out..

Hmm, my brother built decking for my parents this summer, I'd better warn them how slippery it'll be otherwise I can see either my Dad or my brother doing themselves an injury when in a hurry.0

Thanks Mar and skinny too (welcome here skinny)
I am already re-vamping my planting plan for next year. Mar I have to be honest and say that I am hating my curly kale, I eat it because it is good for me. I wish the nice tender stuff as as hardy
So my brassica plans for my 3 brassica beds are: kale, tundra cabbages and neeps (swedes). Going out are the lovely tender cabbages, the sweet sprout varieties and caulies. Oh talk about growing stuff, think about sprouting seeds, it is very easy and gives us fresh veg in the house in only 4 days in all weathers. All the detail is on a past thread

alfalfa seeds are easy to get online and you just need a jar and some old tights plus enough commitment to rinse regularly. I think I will buy more seeds as I am running down. I have had them for 4 years and they are still fully sproutable0 -

Let's get back to the important stuff like new gloves and ugg boots.
Perhaps you'd like to take your debate over to discussion time? This thread is "preparing for winter" and so gloves (however insignificant they are in the grand scheme) are bound to come into it. I'm sure there's plenty of folk more than happy to chew the fat over global warming, you'd get lots of responses over there. We're all adults and we all know weather forecasts esp long range are iffy at best, but some of us still get excited at the prospect of a bit of snow, and enjoy planning to stay cosy, which is why we like this thread.
(But you still might need some gloves this winter, whatever the truth of the matter is)

Hi everyone,
and thank you for the warm welcome.
Totally agree with Mardatha that leeks grow well, and kale too.............however I can't stand kale and grew it for 2 seasons before deciding enough was enough, I couldn't even give the stuff away! (Bleurgh)
Kittie, I don't know how much room you have but apple trees seem to thrive, brambles, raspberries and strawberries do well also.0 -
I love seeing you delurkers, please join in this positive and happy thread, everyone has something to offer. Welcome
His subs are expensive indeed at the normal price but he has some super offers very frequently, so I buy them and my sub is getting longer and longer as he adds new subs to the length, will probably last to 2016. I started with just one month in winter 2010 as I was worried about travelling over the salisbury plains in winter. I then became convinced and spent my birthday money on them and am now a huge fan (obviously, I know). It isn`t too bad for me as we are allowed to share with family members so works out much cheaper in reality
Bung me an important date and area you need, then watch out for the winking face. I will try to help but it has to be limited
Thanks, initially I'm concerned with whats happening between 26 nov to 15 dec. I am prepared to get a month or 2 sub, but am confused as to 30 or 45 day and know i've just missed an offer just rather confused all round really. Have been talking about buying for a year or two but head hurts when I try to work out what to go for:o0
