  • Hello everyone,
Hope you have room for a long-time lurker who just bit the bullet and registered today!!:o
Prepping for winter is pretty much common sense where I live so I feel a kindred spirit with you lot.
Kittie, I know you asked this question of Mardatha, but hope you don't mind my input. Staples here in the North are neep(swede), tatties, carrot, peas, hardy beans ie dwarf broad beans (got to be dwarf as the taller varieties are decimated by the wind) cabbage does just fine here too.
When I was wee my folks always grew the above and it didn't seem to matter what the weather threw at us they always did well.
Wishing you all well with whatever the forthcoming winter brings.:)

  • A propos of nothing, I hadn't realised before today just how dangerously slippy wooden decking can be. I have quite a large corner of the garden which was already decked when I bought the house last year and today I had to sweep it up as it was really wet (long, boring story!). I couldn't believe how slippery it was and made a point to brush all the standing water off it and I will make a point to avoid the whole area this winter. My daughter has a vast amount of the stuff immediately outside the back of the house and I must warn her not to walk across it holding the baby unless she is convinced it is safe and very dry.

what worries me next month is sudden thawing, always seems to happen around christmas ;), remember the floods in past christmases. Imagine snow right up to then and sudden thaw, that is what is scary as anywhere can flood because drains get blocked, you don`t have to be at the bottom or near rivers

alice-mary thank you for the link. Spot on. jet stream is below the states just now but will soon flip to below uk

Hi, delurking to say I'm another one here that is really greatful for all the hints etc.
Hoping you can help me regarding which sub to buy from PC at WA. So confused but also not so well off. Perhaps you can share the best way to start so we are aware of the weather until mid feb at least. We have several important engagements and appointments and surgery so being prepared this winter is even more crucial.

I have the a cold/flu thingy at the mo and it has hit me hard because it has come as a shock having not had a cold or virus for 6yrs+ at least. However my constantly topped up stash of honey and lemons is helping and lots of easy meals in the cupboards, freezer and fridge mean ther is no need to go out. I have lots of snuggley wear to curl up in and under so with the help of prepped vit c tabs and plenty of water I'm hoping to be well clear and back on my feet asap.

For those kitting out cars has any one thought of or got a kettle that runs from the ciggy lighter ?
Also we have a couple of these, one in each door pocket.
More than a torch and reassuring too.

  • I've read the old style threads off and on for years but not joined until now. The news is full of doom and gloom at the moment and I feel even more that I need to prepare better for winter and for other situations that might arise.

I actually hate mild wet winters and am hoping for a bit of snow:)
  • Re decking. I don't have any but my friend broke her ankle slipping on hers, apparent there is anti slip paint you can buy to treat it with.

I think you completely miss the point of this thread or OS altogether. Being an OS winter prep thread we're more into making our 'new' gloves and would walk past expensive branded boots like Uggs in favour for thick socks from the bottom of the draw, wellies and wrapping our feet in carrier bags to boost the welly's waterproof capabilities. :rotfl:
