Preparing for winter IV

Totally agree with you Princess Kate and Mrs L. I've been reading this thread for years.
As I see it, this thread is about preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. It's not about criticising another poster who, whether or not you would choose to spend your money the way she has, certainly keeps me focusing on being prepared and thinking ahead. It's not just my household that I look out for, it's also my elderly parents and for that I thank Kittie and lots of other posters on here who have given me much food for thought and many good ideas.

Where I live we get tons of snow every winter, and I know how hard life can be if you haven't got things sorted. So carry on kittie and everybody else.

Re kale, I freeze it and add to soup so I don't have to taste the bl00dy stuff. But next year I'm goin to cut down how much of it I grow. Leeks do ok - but I am desperate to grow neeps, i tried 2-3 years running and they come to nothing.0 -
I cannot see the sense in knocking people like kittie who choose to subscribe to a weather forecasting service - it is not something I would do, but each to their own. I am interested to hear any forecasts from any source, but I also keep an eye on the sky, plus things like animal behaviour. Any long range forecast will most likely change the closer you get to the time, and even our Met Office sometimes gets it wrong. The winters of 2010/2011 caught out a lot of people, as they were the first harsh winters for some time.
Listening to forecasts gives us the opportunity to prepare as we should do, e.g. ensure adequate food stocks, car emergency kit.
Remember old Noah was sneered at for prepping, and he was proved right in the end!One life - your life - live it!0 -
ok princess, I am doing as requested and am deleting all my controversial posts and any present posts wrt what might be. Have taken all on board and will now make no more future postings or hints with
apologies for upsetting anyone
Just to add that some people have sky, others have 4g mobile phones, some go abroad and have holidays in florida and the like. I have none of these but I do like to spend my money on my hobbies, including what I had been posting about. Each to their own, eh and we are all, thankfully, different

I'd love a snowy winter but at the moment it's looking mild and wet. I've just started making my own bread using the no knead recipe. It's delicious and so easy to make. Goes perfectly with homemade soup. I have some yeast and bread flour supplies in the pantry should they be needed.
please let it snow......:snow_grin:snow_grin:snow_grin0 -
This makes interesting reading.

Even the cabbage white butterflies ignored my kale Mardatha, that was a sign for me that the stuff was truly yeuch!!:D
Neeps are never a problem for me, but maybe putting a fine net over them when they are young would stop them being attacked by flea beetle and give them a good healthy start, or starting them off individually in a wee pot then transplanting them when they are sturdy wee plants (I know the experts say not to transplant root type veg but it doesn't seem to apply to neeps)
Daytime temperatures here are a mild 9c but nights are around 5c or lower so definitely starting to feel as though winter is on her way.
Kittie, I know I only registered yesterday (after long-time lurking
)
but you and all the other regular posters here have made this board a fantastic and friendly resource and would hate to think you were put off by some recent comments.
The way I see it is, if it ain't broke don't fix it..............and it certainly doesn't look broken to me.:D0
