Preparing for winter IV

With regard to weather predicting, I personally feel I am sensible in my approach to being aware of warnings and indications of all camps. A heads up to a possible situation is better than resting on laurels, I feel.
There have been many occasions over the years where that wink smiley from kittie has been very much appreciated because it has meant that I could be fore warned and fore armed.
Keep an open mind I say.0 -
I didn't get more than 'O' level General Science but intuitively I don't believe global warming is totally responsible for the undoubted climate change that's happened within my own lifetime.
However, I think we should take precautions like limiting use of fossil fuels because it simply can't do any harm can it? We should as a society try and consume less and take some personal responsibility for what we buy and dispose of. We should plan for erratic and unexpected weather, extremes and what we consider unseasonal climate. Otherwise I fear vast areas of the world will be affected by almost biblical proportions and it will then be too late to react.Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

It's good to read differing opinions and I appreciate that people have taken time to offer their thoughts but then we can decide as individuals what to go with for our own circumstances can't we?

I have a 25yard swimming certificate and am starting to feel quite inadequate :rotfl:Not dim.....just living in soft focus

Gas heating needs electricity as there are a lot of electrical components in the system. Even oil heating needs electricity (controller, motorised valves etc). However, a gas cooker doesn't need electricity apart from the spark, so you can light it with a match. A gas hob and a thermal cooker are a good combination.
I'm hoping to replace my open fire with a stove, but have to save up to have the chimney lined.
Yes, I thought the boiler would be dependent on electricity - very distracted with thermal cookers now though! I think Mum's old yoghurt making flask would work jolly well as a hay box alternative in the meantime, so plan to see if I can liberate it from her cupboard of archaeological kitchenware next time I'm round the parents ;-).
Doveling, I have no swimming certificates so now feel quite unworthy!0 -

I'm going to lower the tone and not get into the climate change debate by admitting to buying a huge teddy bear fleece throw for our bed from Dunelm Mill today.
Have had my eye on one for ages after buying my grown up sons ones last xmas for their new cold flats.
My cats have taken to it already and I'm looking forward to going to bed with my hot water bottle and fleecy socks to cosy up!
I've found I get a better sleep if I'm properly clothed for bed in layers. We don't keep the heating on overnight and our house is high on a "brae" which catches the wind / its cold.
£2 for 2 pairs for fluffy, thick socks from *imark - a bargain. Love them!
Ok, back to the serious discussion now0 -
Thanks Kittie, I appreciate your advice.;)
Not wanting to be nosey (but I am) did you build your own ecohouse or did you retrofit? It's so expensive trying to retrofit our period house that we can only do bits at a time.

Downshifter, nice to see you posting again, I missed you and wondered where you were!
Aah, thank you Mardywotsit, what a lovely thing to say! I'm planning my second life at the moment - see over 50s thread!!! I may land on your doorstep yet, though south west Scotland is on my shortlist for now. Warmer than Peak District - well anywhere is surely!0 -
This time of year really makes me miss the countryside. I went back to my parent's home for a few days last week as it was my birthday, and even on the days where it was grey and foggy the whole area still looked lovely, brown fields, pale green hedges, still a few leaves on the trees. In London I'm just surrounded by grey buildings and grey pavements and people dressed in black or navy blue and it's just so dull.
Trying desperately to find a job that will let me move back out of London, if it's going to snow then I'd like to be in a place where I can properly enjoy it
Continuing with winter prep; Gentleman Caller asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I said "socks", so at least my feet will be warm! I really need some new pyjama bottoms but I'm quite fussy and I just can't find any I like, even in M&S.
This weekend I need to clean the inside of my windows as they're going a bit mildewy, happens every couple of months especially in winter as my room is bloody cold, so I don't like opening my windows. I've got a ton of soup in the cupboards and I'm slowly working my way through the stuff in the freezer, to make space for more food XD
Oh, and whoever invented the hot water bottle should have been knighted, mine has been a Godsend during the last few days.0
