Oh no....
I'm moving into a house soon, its taking longer than I thought so some of the work hasn't been completed - Including having central heating installed!!!
There's a coal fire for heat / hot water and an elec shower.
I grew up with a coal fire and can never remember being cold but i'm starting to worry now!
Its 3 beds, the girls have their own rooms. One of these rooms has the chimney so the heat "should" rise into her room right?
I have an oil heater for the little ones room but im going to set it on a timer so it turns off well in time before she wakes up and i'm planning on "blocking" it some how so she cant touch it
I've got an electric blanket for my room
Need to buy hot water bottles, we all have dressing gowns & slippers
Anything else I may need?!0 -
- I have to buy some new warmer curtains for the spare bedroom as all my cats sleep in there and I only have some very thin curtains in there at the moment.
- I realised I have to buy another warm dressing gown for myself as my husband has been using mine!:D
- We got a quote from British Gas for the central heating and it was nearly £6k and they said the upstairs flooring would need to come up so we are thinking we won't do that now.:rotfl:HOUSE MOVE FUND £16,000/ £19,000

Is the oil heater likely to tip over? We had one and it nearly flattened the poor cat but maybe yours is more sturdy.
Cellular blankets and thermals maybe also hoodies are nice.:female: INFP :female:0 -
* Thick socks/bedsocks.
* Cheap fleecy throws to sit under in the evening and add to the beds at night.
* Something warm for your girls to put their feet in/on if they're sitting at desks doing homework/drawing, etc. Feet get really cold if you aren't moving about.
* Heat might well rise into your daughter's room, but isn't there a chance it'll be pulled out by a draughty chimney, too? Just a thought.
Do you live somewhere quite cold? I only ask because I didn't switch the heating on until 1 November last year (I'm not usually that hardy but I was determined to spite my energy company for putting up its prices). That would mean your central heating should be finished by the time it gets really cold - shouldn't it?0 -
Take a look at the Preparing for Winter thread. There are loads of ideas and a few comprehensive lists of posters' preps. I've linked to the last page of the current thread.
also definitely worth a read of Rainy Days list on the previous Prep for Winter thread

You'll need something for first thing in the morning before you can get the fire going - what about a mobile calor gas heater?0

Began reading this thread from the beginning recently and just wanted to jump on and thank the person who suggested replacing the old sealant around UPCV window frames. It sounds silly but it was not something that would have occurred to me so I was pleased with the prompt!
Having spent the summer holidays redecorating the bedrooms ~nothing fancy, just a freshen up but I'll get to that in a minute!~
it really was a great finishing touch that will hopefully prolong the life of the windows.
Also as I went room to room, I replaced the light bulbs with energy saving ones & put up blackout blinds again both tips that I have read on here. About a yr ago, we had the walls insulated so I'm hoping that all these little changes will help conserve a few pennies here & there.
Re the freshen up: I used to think that purchasing more expensive paint meant a better finish but I've been pleasantly surprised by the quality of a value magnolia silk emulsion from a certain chain of hardware stores. If I remember reading rightly, it received good reviews on its website too which is why I took the plunge. We decided to just magnolia everywhere as this is not our 'forever' house & it'll be easier to keep clean & tidy & on top of with a freshen up every few years at not a huge expense.
Could really feel a drop in the temperature this morning, the youngest actually climbed into our bed to tell me she'd woken up cold so will continue with the reading of this thread & prepping as & when. Ta x0 -
