I have never been able to afford a social life.

Well, I'm very sorry to hear that. But if there ever comes a point whereby I can't afford to pay £1 for a cup of coffee to sit and socialise with friends then I'd honestly wonder what the point of life was.

I honestly don't care one way or the other :rotfl:

You do appear to be the sort of person who likes to have the last word though so feel free to go ahead, I'm done with this petty conversation :D

I don't think that this is a very gracious way to accept an apology!

Even at £1 a throw, a coffee most days takes a decent slice out of anyone's budget.

Then it's not a realistic budget.

I think it is - if you paid for a coffee every day that's £7 a week on coffee.

I wouldn't want to do that even with greater funds.

£5 a week I would still prefer to put towards other things.

As I've said it's about people's priorities and their needs and wants and also what funds are actually available and how those resources are utilised.

£25/30 per week for food for a single person is a perfectly reasonable amount to live on - to spend 25% of that on having a coffee out is totally disproportionate.

I've highlighted the relevant parts of your quote. For me personally, spending £4-£6 per week on coffee is neither here nor there and is very affordable.

I don't smoke, rarely drink alcohol, never buy take-away/convenience food, never buy newspapers & magazines etc, nor spend money on any other social activities. I can't believe people have such problem with this.

I don't have a problem - as I said it's up to people how they choose to spend their funds but for students who are struggling that is a lot of money.

You aren't spending on other areas so that's your indulgence or pleasure if you like.

Coffee really isn't my thing though so to me that would be money wasted.

Yesterday I went to Kew Gardens with a friend and he missed the train so I waited for him in Starbucks at the other end and treated myself to a Cappuccino and one of those salted caramel things - I spent about £3.75 but I wouldn't want to be doing that very regularly.

Everyone needs to be kind to themselves and do what they enjoy within their means.

You are enjoying the coffee and I would prefer to put my funds to other uses.

I'm the same. I had a colleague who always had to go for a coffee when we went out on trips and it just seemed a ridiculous waste of time and money. That was when I was middle aged so I certainly wouldn't have thought it worthwhile when I was young.

£7 a week would pay for a holiday or a weekly night out.

Exactly I totally agree with you.

If I I had gone to Kew on my own I would have taken my flask.

My yearly pass to Kew is to me money well spent.

What I don't get here is that we are generally talking about folks with limited funds.

I certainly wouldn't be impressed if my daughter was spending £7 a week on coffee but knowing her she is probably trying to save so she can go travelling again.

If people have the money spare then all well and good - if they want to go without in other areas in order to have the coffee all well and good.

But if you're really on a tight budget to me it seems crazy!

But that's the whole point, I am a student on limited funds :D
