Wow interesting post! My mum gave me £10 per week but i officially stayed at home so food, roof & laundry was provided although in reality i bunked up in a single bed with my boyfriend, now husband in his halls. The communal kitchen was so disgusting we rarely cooked so would find the cheapest places to eat out/ takeaways that would leave food spare for breakfast and lunch the following day! I earned around £40 per week from my part-time job. My course was very expensive, needing a lot of outlay, i would buy a lot but my mum would often help out. I was entitaled to travel expenses but no other benefits.

Admittedly I did live on my £250 a month budget in London before the recent inflation and prices rises. I forgot to take this into account when I posted it originally. Sorry for leaving this out and I hope posting this will go some way towards correcting this omission. Thinking about it, I accept that I couldn't live on this budget now, but it is what I lived on at the time and I did manage to go out, complete my course and enjoy myself. Personally, I got my books out of the library rather than buy them, used a lot of PDFs which I could read online and never went over my annual printing budget for coursework that came from the uni. And I travelled in London by bus on a season ticket because it was easier and cheaper than the tube to get to uni from where I was living.

I'm still a student and I spend the money/budget for myself. If I budgeted £125 a week, I would probably spend it. I'm not sure I would be able to tell you what I had spent it on though.

IMO, budgets are really variable for the specific student and depend on what your interests are/the uni/the course/accomodation type etc etc. With reference to the OP, all I can do is speak from my personal experience.

They can't be very cash strapped if they can afford to go out for coffee on a regular basis.

Yes, they must have a realistic budget that allows for a cup of coffee with a friend (because that's what "normal" people do - they drink coffee with friends)

You see Dunroamin, not everyone wants to live life as a hermit...

There is a big difference between going for a coffee occasionally and going for a coffee regularly - the latter really could be expensive.

It's perfectly possible to not imbibe regularly but not be a hermit - a student could invite people to their room for the evening for example, they can spend time walking to the shops together, walking to campus together, going to yoga together - spending time with others doesn't have to mean paying out!

which is all an unemployed person has to do - no lectures, no books, no peers, don't need to get dressed or washed! no life!

"Normal" people with a decent income may drink coffee at Starbucks or Costa on a regular basis but those on a budget appreciate what a waste of money it is.

You really haven't got to grips with the MSE philosophy, have you?

And students don't pay anywhere near the price the likes of Costa & Starbucks charge! £1 for a coffee, and a decent barista coffee at that so it's hardly breaking the bank!

Plus, most eateries & cafes offer decent discounts to students, often up to 25% (Nandos and Frankie & Benny's, Pizza Express etc) so it is perfectly possible to socialise on a budget!

Well generally that's what it's all about isn't it.

Finding ways to enjoy yourself with out spending a fortune if you haven't got it.

I'll remind my daughter about the discounts although I expect she's already aware but thanks.
