I rarely bought books and a decent pad of paper was like £2. Pens were super cheap or free from fresher's fair/other things. Obviously that depends what course you are doing.
So now the student has no food or books! Congatulations!
Even that's not realistic. It's more like thisOriginally Posted by haycorns

Totally unrealistic imho (as is the op).
These students trying to live on these budgets will all be overdrawn by christmas. And in a few years time they will all be posting on the DFW board. And they'll probably feel guilty because someone told them they could live on £50 a week - when you can't!
People get into debt because they don't have enough money to live on (it's not rocket science).0 -
And people also don't get in to debt when they budget according to their means!
As I've said if my daughter is being too frugal and hard on herself then she will adjust accordingly within the limitations of funds available.
Again it's not rocket science.
Parents should not be obliged to give greater than their means and end up in financial straits themselves. Here dead we lie because we did not choose

I'll check about the loo roll - don't think it is for the girl.
A young person we know has just put herself through university (in final year now) without assistance from her parents even though they were 'supposed' to.
She did it by working at Waitrose in the holidays and careful budgeting.
She even manged to join my daughter in Cambodia.
These aren't little children and can cope if they have to or want to.Here dead we lie because we did not choose

There is lots of evidence that students are drinking less.Students may be spending less time in the bar due to cash constraints, the survey suggests.
Many seemed to be cutting back their alcohol intake - only 22 per cent of undergraduates reported drinking more than 11 units a week (equivalent to about five and a half pints of beer), compared with 28 per cent in 2010 and 33 per cent in 2008.

Ok the low down.
The girlie has been at University for five weeks on Sunday.
So far she has done two shops of £40, one shop of £20, no shop at all for a week and then a shop of £9.
She won't be shopping again until next week so that's a total of £109. So so far that averages out at £21.80 per week but the first two shops were particularly large stocking up shops and she won't need to do that for a while so now her shopping costs will be much lower and then at some point they will go up when she needs to stock up again.
So far she has spent £40 on books which she will then sell so recoup some of that and she doesn't need to buy any more for a while although she will do at some point.
Any way that makes £28.80 so according to my figures that's leaving £21.20 for her galavanting!
As I've said she's not budgeting on a £15 for food, £2 for books, £15 for going out kind of basis she's spending as and when she needs to like most of us do but still thinks she will manage fine.
What she has spent more on which she hadn't considered is travel to visit friends at other universities for their birthdays.
She's started yoga which comes under her rent and has mastered the art of batch cooking and I am very proud of her and have no qualms about her coping.
She is very savvy and resourceful - the other year she and a friend saved thousands on a skiing trip by arranging every thing from ski hire to transfers themselves and this summer she even managed to land herself a job in Cambodia for a little while to save on costs during her trip.
By the way maths is really not my strong point so do correct me if I've got it wrong!
Ps she has to get her own loo roll!
Ooh forgot she also has to pay for mobile phone use. Here dead we lie because we did not choose

Actually you're right!
Alcohol would probably work out cheaper than coffee these days! Here dead we lie because we did not choose
