Tipping pizza delivery people

The problem with this sort of arrangement is that the employer is getting away with paying less than minimum wage, and the employee if they have a bad night blames the customer for their poor wage rather than their employer.
The delivery drivers at most Chinese takeaways are paid cash in hand and are not on the 'books'.0 -
Well I typed a long reply and it seems to have not been posted.
Will try again and capture it this time lol.
This thread makes for interesting reading and pretty much ties in with what I found.
I delivered pizza's back in 1994 for a couple of years and the pay was terrible.
This was back in the days of no NMW and I would be paid £2 per hour and 50p per delivery.
Granted fuel was a third of the price of today but I had to take into account an outlay of fuel, insurance, tax and tyres before even starting.
The Delivery boost would vary then according to how busy the day was with a shift being 6 hours.
On a weekend you would average 20 deliveries on a Monday you would average about 5.
My best day was 68 deliveries, which is a record that still stands today. Worst day 1 delivery on the Monday.
The level of tips would vary as well. From 0 to a lot. My best tip was an evening when I had to deliver to the same house twice in one night. It was a pair of American brothers who tipped me £20 between them.
The worst tip was the keep the change on a £4.99 when paid for with a £5 note.
Do delivery drives do things to the pizza. I doubt it. If I got to a delivery and the toppings were all over the place the customer would complain and then I would have to do the delivery again with the complimentary pizza from the shop.
I would not get paid for that delivery and the complimentary pizza would be my free pizza for the night.
As to the order in which they are delivered. 95% of the time I would be given the tickets and have to deliver them in the time stamped order that they came in. If they all came in the same time then maybe, just maybe I would plan my route so the tippers got it first and the non-tippers last. But more often than not it would be according to the route I could take avoiding speed traps, traffic lights, going through town to oggle the girls in short skirts queuing outside the night clubs :rotfl:
So it really is a personal choice. Just remember though, these drivers get your food to you hot and dry in all weathers, I have been soaked, sun burnt and frozen.
I have had to leave the car at the bottom of the hill because the road was frozen and the car could not get traction to get to the house.
So sometimes I guess that is going above and beyond but again it is personal choice.
But I was always greatful when I got a tip. Sometimes that tip would pay for my food for the night if something had gone wrong.
As to the tipping of nurses, builders etc.
My girls we in special care for a month. Every Xmas the nurses at the special care unit and delivery suite get a big box of chocolates to say thank you. Even though most of them have moved on now.
My builders get a crate of beer when the job is finished on time and to budget. I have had a couple of problems and they have come out and fixed them for free even when not related to the work that has been carried out. They are more friends than employees now.
So it is up to you. Just sometimes though take into consideration what the driver has had to get through to get to you. Rain, snow, fog etc.
Hope that gives a bit of an insight into a Pizza delivery driver.
Just don't ask me about the hen nights and ann summers party's I had to deliver to

heavensbug has basically made a very good point.
People appreciate token gestures, even if they are small as you can't afford much - and people remember these gestures. It means that if you do have an issue in the future, you are far more likely to be able to resolve those issues - as they pointed out with their builders.
Be good to people and they are good back to you.. sometimes

We get a chinese takeaway most Saturdays and I always give the driver a £2-£3 tip. He's always friendly, delivers to us first and goes out of his way to call us to let us know he's outside (doorbell keeps breaking!) Even when his phone ran out of credit he rang from the shop before he left so we knew he was on his way.
Little things sometimes do make such a difference, and he always seems grateful for the tip!0 -
You should tip the postman/bin man/milkman every year at Xmas.
Tesco deliverys cost money and I suspect the drivers earn a reasonable wage so I suspect they don't get tipped for that reason. If you're paying tesco a fiver to deliver your shopping you probably resent tipping the driver as well
i point blank refuse to tip our bin men, they refused to empty my bin once because the lid was raised less than an inch because there was an uncrushed cereal box in it!!
bunch of lazy (insert swear word here)
dont have a milkman and postie is a different one every week0 -

Rarely tip anyone at all as I really don't like the practice. Lots of people work very hard for minimum wage or not much more.
By your name I'm assuming you live in Aberdeen? I've lived there for over 6 years and it still astonishes me that:
fish and chips = min £6.50
Chinese for 2 = min £20.00 for 2 mains, 2 rice portions and 1 starter
Indian for 2 = min £25.00 for 2 mains, 1 rice, 1 naan and 2 poppadoms
And these are just takeaways! I'm originally from manchester and the equivalent prices are around £3.50, £13-15 and £13-15 respectively for takeaway.
No wonder I've never met an Aberdonian who tips (and I certainly don't either since moving here) you can't afford to unless you're CEO of an oil company.

That sounds like Cambridge prices... I got a delicious curry in southampton, with the works (two of us, each with main, rice, papadoms, naans and bhajis) and it came to £15.
I envy other areas so much when it comes to takeaway prices.0 -
many years ago when i delivered pizzas.......
if the customer was using a voucher to get say BOGOF or 2nd half price..... if i wasnt given a tip, i asked for voucher, if no voucher, i rang shop and charged full price.
if tip given, i never asked for voucher.
also if the people didnt answer the door and i had to ring off my mobile, i chucked on 50p for the phone call.
otherwise i couldve drove back to the shop, ran from there, then handed over a cold pizzaPromo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?0
