Why? The recipient won't feel awkward accepting it.
  • I live in a block of flats on the first floor and I tip people that come to the door.

I agree with this. Not to bring race into this but in m experience it's only the Chinese takeaways who charge for delivery. I have no idea why they do and others don't.

Me too. I tend to tip if it's free delivery, usually round it up to the nearest £1 plus a £1. Depends on the size of order though; Once tipped £8 for a huge delivery because everyone put a bit in.
Round my way they are all free within a certain distance, even the Chinese. But the Indian and Chinese takeaways tend to deliver further with a fee, while the pizza places tend to just not deliver to your area if it's too far.

they get £1 per delivery less fuel so depending how busy the pizza place is and how small the area they can make an extremely good living doing it and claiming dole job seekers allowance income support widows pension war pension student claims wizz fizz and dizz
    would i tip ?
    no

To be honest, I couldn't give a chuff what they do/get up to/claim for outside their transaction with me. If they arrive at my door with a nice hot meal, delivered in a timely manner and with a smile, then I deem they deserve something for the service. :)

My son worked for a certain pizza chain. The wages are poor and he really appreciated tips. Helped him to actually earn the minimum wage.

There is no reason this situation should occur. If an employer isn't paying minimum wage report them.

I don't tip pizza delivery people. I also self only tip waiters - only where exceptional service has been offered.

Reason being they are employees and subject to no less than NMW like the rest of us - like your tesco worker, your postie etc whom we never seem to even consider tipping. Irrespective of output they will earn at least min wage. I will tip those who are usually self employed and not on a guaranteed wage per hour, such as taxi driver, plumber etc

[although less likely the plumber since he's taking a nice chunk of my money anyway. But you get my point.]

I was wondering when someone was going to post that they never tipped due to national minimum wage, usually the next argument that appears is "Would you tip a doctor/teacher?"

I think some takeaway delivery people are self employed and only get paid per delivery they do. This is why they are not paid minimum wage.

And this is where I leave myself open to being called a tight wad.......

It is up to the employee to negotiate the right pay for the job with their employer.

It is not up to me as the customer to top up his wages.

Even though I said that , I still do tip most of the time.

I try to avoid home delivery as the minimum order amounts are usually 2x what I'd be spending, so I go and collect.

I know that a lot of takeaway delivery drivers are paid based on the mileage, £1/mile, so if you are 3 miles away and you're the only order they deliver they've sat (in their own car) for an hour, to deliver it, and get £3.

I never tip the pizza delivery man (Pizza hut is usually the place I order from), that's mostly because I pay by card.

I have tipped people in the past like Chinese takeaways if paying in cash, I just say keep the change usually.

I'm a bit tight and happy to admit it, but I still do tip on occasion.

Also if you collect the food it will be hot whereas the delivery may mean 30 minutes between being cooked and reaching you.

When I collect I also get some bombay mix to munch too!
