Memory foam/pocket sprung mattress (merged threads)

Hi everyone,
After months of researching mattresses here is what I found out and my personal opinion on things:
1. Double sided is not necessarily better or last longer – check the guarantee on
each item
2. Independent retailers are not always cheaper
3. Trust your instinct and not the salesperson in the shop or on this site!
4. The depth of the memory foam needs to be taken into account only together
with the density. Meaning only low density ones shouldn’t be thicker than 21/2
inch.
5. The density does not only determine the firmness, but also for which body
weight, so you don’t sink in to much.
Now, after all my research I have bought 2 mattresses and would like to report on these:
1. Double Mattress for my teenage son – Snugmattress Coolmax Memory Foam
750, Density 60kg/m3, 2 free memory pillows all for £238 – Fantastic mattress,
good support, not too hot, just brilliant.
2. European Kingsize mattress for myself – Ergoflex Memory Foam, Density 85
kg/M3, £539 + 29 Delivery (but you can get a standard UK kingsize for £399
at the moment) – Verdict: Best mattress I have ever slept on! I have severe
back problems and use to wake up several times at night in pain (old mattress
was a double sided pocket sprung!), but not since I had my new mattress. It
feels firm at first, but moulds to your body and gives you the right support where
you need it. I will never go back to a pocket sprung!
And if anyone near South Wales would like to try for themselves, you are more than welcome to test mine!!!!
I hope I was able to help some of you. And I don’t care what anybody else says – I couldn’t be any happier with my new mattress!0 -

Hi Pebbles.
Where on earth did you do your research?0 -
Tim,
Why? Do you disagree?
These are facts widley available to everyone who takes the time to look.0 -

Unfortunately there is a huge amount of false information out there about mattresses, as there probably is about most products on the market. So some of it should be taken with a pinch of salt, and taken as sales propoganda. When reading much of the information it is essential that common sense is applied also:
1. Double sided is not necessarily better or last longer – check the guarantee on
each item
It is common sense that tells you that any mattress will wear more evenly if it can be turned over as well as turned around lengthways. If mattresses didn't need turning at all for even wear, then the manufacturers wouldn't tell us to rotate them lengthways.
For years we were allways told to turn mattresses on a regular basis to make them last longer. The only reason why there are mattresses on the market that are non turn is because they are far cheaper to manufacture (this especially applies to memory foam mattresses, because the memory foam is the most expensive part of the mattress). Although they will tell us that it is for convenience.
2. Independent retailers are not always cheaper
Independent high street shops may not allways be cheaper, but independent on line stores are 99% of the time. It is the smaller independent manufacturers who do tend to make higher quality products for less money. As far as the quality goes, automation in the large manufacturers has overall lowered the quality. But most of the smaller independent manufacturers still make theirs by hand.
3. Trust your instinct and not the salesperson in the shop or on this site!
I agree totally with this, even if it relates to advice that I give. As I said at the start, use common sense.
You also need to remember that most of the sites who give the impression that they are independent, and give out advice are usually either owned, or financed by either retailers or manufacturers. So they will never give out advice that will have any negative influence on sales for their members or owners.
4. The depth of the memory foam needs to be taken into account only together
with the density. Meaning only low density ones shouldn’t be thicker than 21/2
inch.
I'd love to know where you got this one from? It is complete rubbish.
The memory foam is only there to provide even support by contouring to your body, but without causing pressure points. 2" of a high density memory foam is enough to do this (only with a very low density memory foam would you need it to be deeper). Due to the open celled construction of memory foam, if the memory foam is too deep, then you will sink down the full depth and can become engulfed. This can make you too hot, and can also make it difficult to change position.
5. The density does not only determine the firmness, but also for which body
weight, so you don’t sink in to much.
The firmness of a memory foam mattress is mainly determined by the layer under the memory foam. This could be either springs, or reflex foam. However if someone likes a very soft mattress, then one with high density memory foam is very unlikely to be suitable, as a high density memory foam won't have a soft feel.
The optimum density of memory foam is a compromise. If it is too low then it won't give very good support at all, and might as well not be there. If the density is too high it will give excellent support, but the recovery rate will be very slow, so it can be difficult to change position in bed. So this is why the optimum density is between 60 and 70kg per m3. Before anyone shouts me down, some people may like a higher density, I'm only stating what the optimum is, that will suit most people.

Tim,
seems to me you want to do a bit more into depth research, my dear. You don't seem to be up to date with your 'bed' knowledge.
I have no desire or need to argue with you, because I have the evidence to proof my facts. So you can say whatever you like, I don't care!
I just wanted to let others know about my research and recent purchases. By the way I am multi-lingual and the UK is not the only place I researched.
I am more than happy with my mattress and would never go back to anything else and that is all that matters!0 -
Hi
Just looking for tjhughes deals, Tim you do seem to say stuff, and never agree with anyone ever :-p
Where do you get all this bed knowledge from please0 -

I'm not suggesting an argument at all. One thing I do know a lot about is beds and mattresses. My research is 100% up to date. I deal with manufacturers, as well as 1000's of consumers. I know all the gimmicks, and propoganda that are used in the bed industry, and I know about the up to date research and development. As I am in the trade the manufacturers are quite open with me about why they design mattresses the way they do.
All I am asking is where did you do your research, as some of the information you have been given is very wrong?0 -
Hi

I am in the ibed industry (which I am quite open about), and have an in depth knowledge of all the gimmicks and hype used to try and convince people to spend more money.
When I first found this forum I was horrified by some of the things people were being told (mainly by sales reps). So I set out to let people know the truth so they don't get ripped off.
There are a few people who come into the forums to stir up trouble. Some of them are also in the trade, and don't like me telling people the truth. Others are just trolls who want to start arguments (I'm not including Pebbles in this as they are just giving their personal view, and not trying to start an argument). If it wasn't for the 100's of people who thank me for my advice, then I would have stopped giving it out a long time ago.
The only time I will disagree with people is when the information they are giving out is wrong. I understand that most of these people have just been given wrong information.
If you read much of what I say, then you will see that most of it is simple common sense. You have the choice to accept my advice or not, and that is completely up to you. It doesn't effect me one way or the other, but it could help to stop you making an expensive mistake.0 -

Err no Tim perhaps it mainly has something to do with the fact that you often then get people Googling your name and then using your company to purchase from. You only recommend independent online retailers and independent manufacturers and guess what that is what you mainly sell! Yes your opinion (not fact as you keep saying) is useful to be taken along with information from other places but you do not do it just because you are being kind. Sometimes you might in parts of the world where you don't sell to, but i'm sure you will admit that it is also because then people often come to you to purchase from your independent bed company which sells independent retailer beds and YOU make money! People should be aware that your opinion comes from someone who is a bed seller of an independent firm, so therefore you have your own motives just like the sales people in the big high street stores... :eek:0 -

Now here is a prime example of someone who only comes on here to start trouble.
They actually took my advice, have said that they were very happy with the advice that I gave, and actually acted on my advice.
I'm not going to argue with their lies, as most of what they say is actually liblous and against forum rules...........Stalking is also illegal.
There are 100's of independent manufacturers, and 1000's of independent on line retailers.0
