I have seen the Apollo Calypso Memory Foam & Pocket Sprung 5ft King Size Divan Bed on the Lazy Beds website and wondered if anyone has pruchased this bed and if so how is it.

Also, the La Romantica Venice bed regularly pops up in these threads and I was wanting anyone who has one to give me some feedback.

    Degs

The Calypso isn't two sided any more, although it used to be.

I ordered a mattress from Tim's company today and I'm looking forward to receiving it soon!!!!

I'm a little nervous because I went against my wife's advice that I should test before I buy... I read most of the relevant threads on this forum and I asked relevant questions by email to Tim himself, I also had a chat with him on the phone :-) so, I did everything possible to make sure the mattress I ordered is as close to what my wife wanted from the shops :-)

I will come back, once I've had the chance to sleep on the mattress for a week or so to give a review of it.... the only thing I found missing here :-( a detailed review of the Venice mattress by La Romantica.

    Wish me luck :D

Well, here I'm again with an initial review of Venice mattress by La Romantica.

Before I say anything about the mattress I'd like to say I'm impressed with the service I have received so far from Tim's company. I received an email early Friday to advice me of the next day delivery and in the afternoon a telephone call with more details on the approximate delivery time.

    Now, the mattress:

First impressions: It came inside two sets of plastic covers.... is it a returned mattress? Possibly but it could also be just a measure to keep the mattress clean and safe. Maybe another client can comment on this.

The first thing to notice is the smell - I hope this goes away or it will drive us insane :D I'm so happy that is summer and we can leave the windows open.... I believe all memory foams mattresses have this problem so it's something you just have to put up with for a while.

The mattress needed to convince my wife :D as she had set her heart on the Chauser sold at dreams (2000 springs and 3" memory foam - 4 of a maximum 5 in softness - £1599.00)
Visual appearance: The Venice does not look as good as the Chauser. The Venice all around the sides looks a bit too plastic to me while the Chauser uses a better finishing material. - The top and bottom look OK, the Chauser has a better finishing, more attention to details.( Am I being unfair comparing a £1600 mattress with a mattress that cost under £600.00? I don't think so because the claims is that this mattress is better than mattresses that cost over £1600. in the shops)

Now, the real test... the first test was somehow confusing. We wanted a comfortable mattress that was as close to the Chauser so we opted for the Venice that has 500 more springs than the Madrid for an extra £60. This was the first time that my wife and I had ever tried a brand new memory foam mattress and the test revealed that the mattress was much firmer than we anticipated :D so much that I felt that I needed to lift the mattress protector and double check this was indeed the Venice :D. My wife was already looking at me rather annoyed with my choice lol. I said, you must give it time, wait a few days and you will see that it will get softer and more comfortable.

The first night revealed that the mattress was very comfortable for me but not so much for my wife.... she is lighter than me so her side will take longer to soften up ( I guess) having said that my wife admitted she slept better on this mattress than on the old one. By the morning I was totally rested and very happy with the mattress and my only concern is that although my mattress has the climasmart cover I still felt too hot during the night. Maybe a change of quilt is needed.

Conclusion: My wife still needs a little more time to learn to like it better. I'm happy with it and I hope that in a few days it will be nearly as comfortable as the Chauser. However, if I had lots of money I'd probably buy the Chauser, it just looks smarter and better quality, it also feels extremely comfortable.

If there is anything worth reporting I will come back at a later date.

Check out DBS Biddulph website, they sell the double sided Apollo Calypso.
(Begs the question why they would change it, if double-sided is so good? I'm just pondering, I don't actually need an answer thanks!)

I think I have a stalker following me around the forums :rotfl:

The Calypso used to be 2 sided, but they started changing the spec to cut production costs......simple as that.

I've had two beds from Tim's company and my mother has had one. All three beds came with two sets of polythene covers so I assume this is the norm. None of the mattresses gave any indication that they had been used before.

Did you leave the mattress uncovered in a well ventilated place for a while before making up the bed? One of our beds is the Madrid and I didn't notice any smell with it after leaving it out of the covers for a few hours in a room with the window open. We used to have a Rest Assured memory foam/pocket sprung bed and the smell with that one was very strong, lasted for months!

Body heat "softens" the memory foam, then when you get up it goes back - hence "memory". I don't think giving it a few days will make it any softer. Ours hasn't.

It's a good job you didn't have the Madrid, your wife surely wouldn't like that as it's medium-firm whereas the Venice is medium.

So it's not because it's a waste of time making them double sided then? That's what I was told. Still, I knew you'd HAVE to answer, even when asked not to! :T

You were told wrong then......common sense would tell you that a two sided mattress would last longer than a non turn one.
  • So it's not because it's a waste of time making them double sided then? That's what I was told. Still, I knew you'd HAVE to answer, even when asked not to! :T

I don't think a double sided is a waste of time, in fact, that is why I opted for the Venice. I'm not a mattress expert or anything but it's just common sense really.
  • We bought a kingsize divan with Climasmart fabric on the mattress. We've had it for a week now so these are first impressions.

    Pros:

Really comfortable, firm rather than hard and it certainly didn't take days to get used to. So two very happy sleepers.
Good pre sales advice, yes, we bought from Bedlum, we'd ordered from them before and been happy with the service.
Helpfull delivery drivers and good communications.

    Cons;

One week in with sheets off during the day and windows open it still smells quite strongly.
I really hope this wears off as I find it very unpleasant.
The divan base is very basic to look at. No handles on the drawers and as the mattress doesn't fully cover the divan you'll need a valance to cover the ugly brown fabric on the top of the base.
Its only a few millimeters but it makes a difference.

    Conclusion:

Only a week in so can't comment on durability.
If you are sensitive to smells, e.g. pregnant or suffer from migraines, I'd be a tad cautious.
I wouldn't choose the divan base again as it makes the bed look 'budget'.
If I'd seen this base in store I probably wouldn't have bought it.
The foam/pocket spring combination is very comfortable. I'd buy this mattress again.

Hope this helps anyone struggling through the very long and occasionally argumentative threads to make a choice.

I agree with that Salvador, I've been around long enough to know that turnable mattresses were the norm and remember when no-turn mattress were brought in as a "convenience".

We brought the double size Madrid with Climasmart and agree with everything you say here.

As I mentioned in my previous post, we didn't have this smell. I'd have a word with Tim.

Our previous drawer divan (Rest Assured and more expensive than the Madrid) didn't have handles on the drawers either. Not sure if cheaper means no handles but it's no bother to pull the drawer out from under the bottom lip really. Our mattress covers the base, the only place you can see the base-top fabric is on the corners but the quilt covers the bottom corners anyway. Perhaps as they're hand made there is always going to be a slight variation  but I always think a valance looks nice anyway and finishes off dressing the bed.

The foam/pocket spring combination is very comfortable. I'd buy this mattress again.

Absolutely agree with you Armchair, it's the most comfortable bed we've ever had and I never thought anything could top my old Dunlopillo!

I remember that too TimsMom, sorry TomsMom, I also remember when the TV took ages to warm up when you turned the set on! :rotfl:

So Timstalker, sorry, Frugaloodle, if you were around when turnable mattresses were the norm, you'll probably realise that they lasted longer than the new, convenient for the busy housewife, no-turn, best thing since sliced bread mattresses.
Times change, technology moves us along. But I know you're all Tim / Bedlum converts on this thread, so I'll leave you to it. :hello:

Indeed they do, but not everything is progress. In what respect are you meaning this regarding the mattress being discussed?

Ok then, rather than trying to spoil this thread, why don't you tell us what you know about modern technology that is used in mattresses to make them non turn???

Your remark 'TimsMom' is untrue and libelous. And is also very easy to disprove.
