I have heard conflicting opinions, can someone put this to rest for me? :
More pocket springs = firmer, more supportive?
    OR
    More pocket springs = softer?

I always thought it was the former, but someone from Memflex and someone from Bedlum told me it is the latter...?!

It all depends on the manufacturer of the springs.

As I understand that Memflex use plastic springs, then they probably wouldn't be able to make them in a lower gauge. So with the plastic springs they could be right, but with steel springs then it can vary.
  • Hi all:
I bought a kingsize Sleepeezee 2000 pocket sprung Baroness mattress in September 08. Recently I have noticed stains on the bottom of the mattress and a soggy feel to it.

The top is fine, new looking and no problem, the sides and bottom are now stained.

The mattress rests on Ikea wooden slatted base with air circulating around it.

I have contacted my supplier but have heard nothing.

Is there any advice you can give me as to how I should handle this problem? I have taken photos of the stains and sent them to my supplier who has, in turn, contacted Sleepeezee.

Should I be doing something more?

Any idea why this happened? I have had 3 previous mattresses and none of them showed any stains when they were taken away. (all were on the same bed base).

    Thanks in advance.

It sounds like some of the fillings may have been damp when the mattress was manufactured. The mattress is non turn so at least they can't acuse you of spilling something on it then turning it over.

Are the stains rust coloured? If so then the springs are probably rusting due to the dampness.

Also is there a musty smell?

If they offer you a replacement, then it would be a good idea to go for one with no more than 1800 springs, and is two sided so that it can be turned and will last longer.
  • Thanks Tim, I was hoping this would catch your attention.

Yes there are red spots all over and my overactive imagination was thinking "body parts" inside the mattress. Also, there was a slight musty smell.

For the present, I am opening windows and also use a small fan under the bed until Sleepeezee gives us a response as to what they are going to do.

What are our options? If they do not respond what is our next step?

    Thanks a lot.
  • Sorry Tim, forgot to ask, why 1800 springs? is it because we could then turn the mattress?

    Thanks.

It sounds like flood damaged stock.

Where did you buy it from, and did you notice any stains when you bought it?

Next step would be trading standards.

Sorry Tim, forgot to ask, why 1800 springs? is it because we could then turn the mattress?

    Thanks.

Because if it has too many springs then they have to be very small to fit them all in the mattress. This means that they could get damaged easily.
  • I bought it through the internet. We had to wait over a month for the mattress to be delivered, which was fine, and did not see any damage mainly because it was so heavy it took 2 men to put it on the bed base. I did not look at the underside until I noticed the spots of mould??? on the foot of the mattress.

Many thanks for your help, I will let you know how this works out.

I did actually reply, but it seems to have vanished

It sounds like it was probably the fillings that were damp when the mattress was made rather than the whole mattress.

Did you buy through ebay, or a sellers own web site?
  • I bought it through MattressLand who are on the internet, but we did a phone order. However our credit card went to someone called Vitastyle Limited.

I have sent a registered letter to them which they have signed for today and told them that I would require them to rectify the situation and come up with a solution by the 6th, as Consumer Direct advised me to do.

By the way, the spots are spreading upwards to the top of the matterss now. I am still airing it daily and running a fan under the bed which should deliver circulation through the wooden slats.

What is your opinion of Dormea Mattresses?

Sorry I did not pick up your message yesterday and, again, thank you.
