Tim, Is it possible to point one out for me, the open coil sprung one with memory foam please.
I have loads to do today, and only if you have time, could you help me.
I could always buy one from you if it's a good price.

And no, I haven't tried a memory foam mattress before.

Sorry I can't answer that in the forums as it could be seen as advertising.
  • After reading this and similar threads I purchased a Calypso mattress and it was delivered today. Havent had chance to try it out yet but I cant wait. I paid £80 for my last divan and mattress and I have had it 10 years. Thought I better buy a decent one b4 my back packs in!

If you don't mind me asking, what make Calypso did you buy (there are a few different makes), or if you don't know that, then who did you buy it from?

    Hi Tim

I’m looking for a bed, and as I do, have come to mse for some independent and useful advice.

I’ve been reading your posts, and you definitely know a lot about beds and provide lots of very useful information. However I do have some questions

You generally recommend La Romantica beds (http://laromanticabeds.co.uk/) which meet your criteria for top quality memory foam mattresses (previous posts). You also sell these mattresses, which makes perfect sense to me -independents need to sell brands they believe in. However, you appear to be the only seller of this brand that I can find, is this correct?

Also, where do you get your facts from, especially regarding the optimum thickness of memory foam. I can’t find corroborating information elsewhere. I know that you sold to an osteopath, but then another osteopath posted with an alternative view who bought an alternative mattress.

I hope that this post doesn’t make you too defensive, you have provided a very useful counter to the high street which is why I come to mse, & I admit I can be a bit cynical. Ultimately just a junior mse member trying to make a good buy…

    Thanks

No I'm deffinately not the only outlet for La Romantica Beds, they couldn't survive on just our sales. They actually have a huge customer base. However you tend to find that some retailers don't mention the brand name of less well known brands. As far as searching on Google goes, I would have thought that there would be loads of retailers on there selling La Romantica products.

I'm not like many sales reps in the big chain stores, I actually like to make sure I know about the products I sell. So for this reason I do a lot of research into the whole range (especially memory foam).

Without spending a long time searching (again), I couldn't tell you exactly where to find the information, but it definately wasn't any of the many sites that claim to be independent, but are actually owned by manufacturers. Being in the trade you do tend to get to know what is the truth, and what is a sales gimmick.

When you think about how memory foam works it actually becomes common sense that there is only a narrow band for the depth. Memory foam is only there to mould to the contours of your body. It isn't for softness, and it doesn't give any bounce. It is the layer under the memory foam that does this. So for this reason 2" is enough to mould to the contours of your body, and support all the dips without putting pressure on the extremities. An example is that if you are on your back it will mould to the small of your back without putting pressure on your buttocks and shoulder blades.

If the memory foam is too deep, then it won't give you any more support, but you will sink deeper into it. There are 2 main problems with sinking too deep: 1) The foam will engulf you and will insulate too much of your body's surface area, and can result in overheating. 2) It can be very difficult to change position in bed because you have sunk so much, and will just keep rolling back into the dip.

Most of it is common sense, not rocket science.

No it won't make me defensive. I get used to people being sceptical when a retailer actually gives honest advice rather than trying to con people into spending loads of money.

    Hi Tim,

thanks for detailed reply! Yes it does seem to be very logical, especially changing position in bed....

I googled 'La Romantica Venice beds' and 'La Romantica Madrid beds' but only found one supplier.

    Any ideas?

I have no idea who the other suppliers are I'm afraid.

La Romantica have only been making them a few months.

    Hi Tim,

Do you recommend any mattresses you don't sell?

I know it's a strange question, but it's always good to have a range of products from which to choose from. Also I believe it's only advertising if you are advertising your own stock

    Thanks

The touble is that there are very few 2 sided pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses on the market. There was one other company who's beds we used to sell, but their quality dropped, and they started using the wrong springs (I presume to save money). So we stopped dealing with them, and I wouldn't recommend them any more.
