hmm, dont know when it'll come off - may be a day or so needs to pass before they "release" your account - to stop spam I guess from a bot in one day?

If she's 18-24 months old, it's probably not her first litter; some of ours went into their first season at 9 months. As for giving birth, it'll probably be in the middle of your bed! :) Is it worth speaking to the PDSA about help with vet fees?

good that you have taken her in

Unless you are unlucky she will do it herself - just be there to keep an eye on her.
Provide a couple of large boxes with an old sheet. She will choose were to have them but if you give her the choice she will hopefully opt for one of them rather than the bed or the back of the cupboard. Put them out now so she gets used to them and in the room where you want her to be - where you can keep an eye on her. When the time comes you will find her to be very unsettled and wandering around. She might act stressed (can't blame her) At this time keep everything quiet, low lights and the doors closed so she can't hide away.
As each kitten is born she will lick it clean. It might take some time until she is finished. Just ensure the kittens don't fall to the edge of the box and get cold whilst she is busy with the next one. Thye should wriggle back to her. Try not to touch but if you are worried one is getting cold use a piece of kitken roll to nudge it back towards mum - trying not to get your scent on it.
By next morning you should have fluffy bundles and a proud mum. she will know what to do. She might be protective and not let you near. She will eat for England and more still!

When the kittens are on the move you could try to borrow an indoor cat pen to contain them - and protect your house. At least then you know where they all are, and they will still be there when you get home. Mum and babies will be fine in the pen overnight - all safe

    good luck!

If you take out the spaces you may be able to see her x

Thank you all for your advice so far - wish we were seeing the vet sooner!!
  • Maybe we've been very lucky with our vets, who can say. But having used two smallish practices over the last 25 years (only due to relocation) between you and me (and the entire MSE board) when we were really strapped for cash and had a huge bill/course of treatment to pay for, all of our vets have discreetly offered 'easy payment' terms regardless of the posters in the waiting room. When your vet hears this cat's story, don't be surprised if they're incredibly sympathetic (even if they hide behind their professional persona) and help you as much as they can. Vets are well aware that good animals are dumped by cruel, negligent owners - and often thoughtful, caring people like you pick up the pieces because you have a heart, even if you'd never intended having a pet. Explain the situation and I hope, really hope, I'm proved right!

The last cat I took in was a pregnant stray. She had four kittens. I kept one, gave one and sold two together for £45 which was the cost of the neutering. It was a while ago and a very cheap vet (who has now retired, unfortunately)

The amount of damage caused to wall paper and carpets plus the amount of food the mum and babies ate was considerable and even if I had sold them all I would have been out of pocket. But that's not why we do it, as least it shouldn't be.
