18 Months Interest Free with Capital One

  • I've applied today.
I phoned and was informed that there is no balance transfer fee with the Smartsave option.
  • It would seem that there are at least 2 versions of this offer. I have had a PM confirming that not all applicants need to spend £100 to get 18 months credit. I can find no reference to 2% balance transfer fee.

  • My offer came yesterday 9 months 0% on transfers and purchases. I phoned and asked if I could change it to the 18m deal and they said no. The 18m deal is "extremely rare and only by invite" and then said "so is the 9M". I even tried the "but barclaycard are offering 12m 0% so can't you offer the 18m to better that". A clear No was the answer "not unless you have the invite". So if anyone has an invite to spare I'd love to hear from you!

How can an offer, that is only by invite, (which I am presuming is only for certain customers who fit their profile) be used by someone else - who doesn't fit that profile?

  • I presume they don't have everyone's profile. If an uninvited applicant meets their criteria they may offer the card - its always worth a shot.

  • Dear Martin

I have just received one of these 18 month interest free forms and would very much like to take it up, however, I would like to know the same as Jimney, on my application there is a 2% handling fee, which in my case will amount to £100. Is is still a good offer?!!

    Cheers

2% over 18 months works out at an annual rate of approx 1.33% (it will be slightly less than this because of compounding but it is a matter of less than 0.1%)

    12/18 * 2% = 1.33%

The other catch might be if the fee is not immediately paid on the first statement, if the interest free money is getting paid off first and the fee then attracts a standard rate it bumps the cost up again. I can't tell, I don't have an invite so can't see the terms of the offer.
  • I got one of these offers but, like its been said, 2% transfer fee. I'm Sticking with my Barclaycard 0% till August. Another totally free offer is bound to come out before then - so why pay the 2%?

The fee makes sense to the lender because it's up front, of course. It then only makes sense to the borrower to 'commit' to the 18 months. In that time other offers may come up.

But if you can still take advantage of other offers at the same time it isn't a problem..

[This is akin to Barclaycard's 'life of balance plus fee' approach - which makes money more slowly for the tart than a series of short-term deals.]

  • My wife recieved an invitation from capitol one yesterday, and it was the better version - no fee for bt, and 18 months at 0%. Phoned them up as she wasn't interesteed in it and they said it's ok for me to apply using the form ;D

btw the reference number on the bottom of the back of the t&c is BSTC33/0904 if there are two different versions this code I would have thought would be different

The code on the main offer itself is BLF33/0904 on the front and BLB33/0904 on the back.

The code for the other piece of information about the "3 quick steps to transfer your balance with the Capitol One smartsave service" is GENF11/0904 on the front and GENB11/0904 on the back.
