Herbalus is probably looking for the two DDs needed on the Santander 123, as one of the pre-req for receiving interest (and cashback).

I am not aware of any T&C that says the DDs must be set up with someone other than Santander, but I would put a Santander esaver DD for a Santander 123 into the "serious p*ss taking" category. Particularly since there are plenty of opportunities for other DDs for which Santander would pay you cashback (that might easily pay for the £2/mth fee the 123 comes with).

Oh, I see. One to Tesco and another to Mysave, Principality, Post Office, etc. then if they didnt want to transfer over one of the ones that would get you cashback.

They let you transfer any of the cashback-yielding DDs, from what I can tell. Not seen anyone reporting that they couldn't transfer one of those DDs.

Yes I am looking to fulfil the 123 conditions - I don't have any other direct debits available as I'm living with parents so don't have energy companies etc. I agree with the "p**s taking" category, but I have an empty eSaver account (bonus rate ended, haven't closed it yet), and it would save the (small I will admit) hassle of opening another account with another provider.

I was trying to setup DD from Halifax reward account to 2 e-savers, one with Barclays and other with Lloyds. It can not be done, Barclays will appear as a SO and the form you get to print off from Lloyds will not let you setup a DD only a one off payment.

so I need to find 2 online saving account that I can start with £1 or £10 and is able to setup DD.

Thanks for experimenting with Lloyds and Barclays - I have updated the first post in this thread to say they don't do DDs, to save another poor soul the disappointment.

There are a fair number of places that do let you set up DDs - did you try any of these first?

I have opened one Tesco saver but am awaiting information in post to setup online. I was in Halifax today to sort out DD'S for my 3 accounts and was told I would need 6 different DD to keep all 3 accounts open.

AC1 will have Tesco and mobile
AC2 will have gas and electric
AC3 will have 2 charities to begin with

Yet another case of a serious misunderstanding, or seriously uninformed bank staff.

The T&Cs say you need 2 different DDs on an account, being paid monthly.

There is nothing in writing from Halifax that says these DDs must be different from DDs that you use on other Halifax accounts.

2 DDs, being paid monthly, to two different places, should be all you need to meet their DD requirements from May onwards.
  • Am getting round to this rather late in the day. Have a Santander esaver already so will get the forms to do monthly DDs from there but will have to open a Tesco savings account - can't readily see from their website whether i can set it up to take a payment each month? Is that possible and how do you do it? I also have an ICICI Hisave which is open but dormant - could change the nominated account on that but as far as i can see, there is no way to set up a monthly pull?

With Santander you can specify a date for a regular payment.

I believe you can do the same with Tesco but I cant log in to the site at the moment to confirm as it doesn't 'recognise' my computer and is failing to send a txt with an access code to my phone :-/

I confirm that you can have 3 DD per e-saver as I now have 2x e-saver accounts each with 1x DD for each of my Halifax accounts.

So for my 6x Halifax accounts I now have:
    1. DD1 = e-saver 1 DD2 = Tesco
    2. DD1 = e-saver 1 DD2 = Tesco
    3. DD1 = e-saver 1 DD2 = Tesco
    4. DD1 = e-saver 2 DD2 = Tesco
    5. DD1 = e-saver 2 DD2 = Tesco
    6. DD1 = e-saver 2 DD2 = Tesco

maybe an obvious question - but how do you get multiple halifax accounts?
