Sorting my life out one day at a time0 -
Well I've done nothing today but DH has dug out ahuge rosa rugosa from the back, roots and all and in its place put a lovely evergreen from his mother's garden, I hope it survives, it's too late to move things really.
A work collegue of DH's is going to give me some puprle sprouting broccoli which will be good. I've never had any success with any brassicas at all so just don't bother any more, but if I'm getting some for nothing...Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -

I hope you don't mind me joining you in this thread.
I have just extended my garden onto land that non one owned at the back of my house. The land was very overgrown, lots of weeds and such. Council basically told us to do what we wanted with it, after searching to find who owned it and turning up that no one did, my neighbor and i took the plunge and extended. I have only been in the house a year, i was not going to start the garden yet, but my husband is deployed with the military right now and i needed something to take my mind of things.
We had the dead tree cut down a few weeks back, it was huge, i am left with the stump in my garden, but i will make a feature out of it ( don't know what yet , but i will )
so this is what i have done in the matter of a week, most of it myself, with a little help from my 11 year old daughter, and my brother to help knock down the brick wall.
day 1
day 2
day 3 we used the stones from the wall to make a path at the back, where the fencing will go.
Had the fencing finished friday, put down 2 tonne of top soil, but my camera batteries died so not took a picture yet, will take one tomorrow and post.
The gate is being fitted next week, so all i need to do now is decide what i am doing there. I want to put grass down so the kids have somewhere to play, and make raised borders and the soil is no good for growing, but money is tight now, so trying to find different ways i can do this as frugally as possible.
I did go to Wilkinson's today and got some climbers and ever greens really cheaply. Also got some honey suckle cuttings off my neighbor so am trying to root them.
So i think i am going to be very busy evenings and weekends form now on lol!!0 -

oh my goodness - I can't believe how much you got done in the time - got no suggestions just wanted to say :T :T :T :T :TI'm going to feed our children non-organic food and with the money saved take them to the zoo - half man half biscuit 20080 -
lilmrsmullen - well done you getting so much done, and how lucky to gain all that land, hope you will be able to grow lots of things!!!
joannasmum - im also an expert at growing weeds!!!! (although the sweetcorn ive just planted out is still there, and ive noticed a few betroot shoots coming through, so hopefully this year i will have some company for the weeds!!!)0 -
Thanks stefejb, catowen. I got up bright and early this morning, I have decided i am going to make raised boxes before i put any turf down, this coming from me who has never done any DIY in her life. Oh i tell a lie i put up a cutrain rail which is lob sided lol!! ( but i am still proud of it)
I have been searching the net for info on how to do it and got some great sites, the wood ones seem the easiest to make, i am going to go price the wood today, if it is too expensive i am going to freecycle and see if anyone has any. I was thinking 2 smaller boxes of 3x4ft, and one larger one of 4x5ft.0 -
as promised heres what it looks like with the fencing, still a long way to go. but i am so pleased with it so far. (haha don't mind the washing line, and i did not realise i got my neighbour painting his gate in the pic lol)0

Well done, LilMM - what an achievement in such a short time.
I have a tree stump just like yours - it will cost too much to shift and, just like you, I intended to make some sort of a feature of it. Growing alpine plants in was quite successful but it still got in the way and didn't look much of a feature. Do you know what I did?
I hacked the middle out and inserted my whirlygig washing line.
It's great!
