lol emmy.. a bit like me.. I'v never grown ANYTHING before!!

16 sweetcorn plants??.. how much sweetcorn will that give you?.. I'm planning another 3 palnts but thought 6 plants would be enough..lol

    Caz

Hi, Caz! I've also planted 16 sweetcorn (they're in pots atm, and will be planted into the polytunnel soon). They're best planted in a block rather than a row, as they're wind-pollenated, so 16 gives a 4 x 4 square ;) I'll probably put some more in as 16 plants will give about 20 cobs. I eat a couple straight from the plant, barbeque some, cook some, and freeze the rest.

    Hi

Since moving in to our house we have done very little to the garden apart from mowing the grass. Now our dd wants to play out all the time and its not safe for her to do so on her own its the ideal time for me to get going on it. I'm going to make a start this afternoon clearing one boarder so that I can stain the fence tomorrow.

No doubt I be back for advice before the days out.

    Hello,

I have been a little busy in the garden, first year in our new house, first time we have owned the garden!! I am so excited.

I have a few things in pots from earlier years:

Blueberry bush - extremely healthy and covered in flowers!
    Strawberries
    Raspberries
    Herbs; thyme and oregano
Gooseberry bush - extremely healthy and quite a few flowers!

I now have planted potatoes, parsnips, onions, garlic, courgettes, peas and purple sprouting brocolli in the garden.... with Pak Choi, tomatoes, aubergines, pepper plants, runner beans, sweat peas and beetroot in pots.

I am loving my garden just need to sort out the patio area as it is sloping and ugly!

With no lawn - now my veg patch it would be nice to have somewhere to sit and enjoy the weather.

Great pics, i will try and get some on here too.

Thanks for all the tips loving the whole thread.

    Hello,

Well, ive planted out my sweetcorn plants that i grew in yogurt pots in my kitchen a few days ago - and they seem to be fine. i replanted some seeds in the empty pots and they have started to sprout already!!!! Near where i have planted my sweetcorn, i can see a few little sprouts from the beetroot seeds that ive planted, but nothing from the little gem lettuces - i hope they will come through soon tho, as this is my first attempt at growing anything other than some pre planted herbs i did last year (they are still growing, so thats promising!!!).
I also planted some carrot seeds last month, and some shoots have come up, but ive got to admit, im not sure if they are carrot shoots or weeds, so im still watering them, and im going to see what happens.
Also did some weeding and mowed the lawn today - any tips on getting rid of dandilions???

How daft am I? I just recently signed up for an organic veg box and now i look at all the plantlets I've got growing I'll be swamped with veg this summer if it all works out! Maybe I can sell some back to them hee hee.
    I currently have -
2 plug trays of alpine strawb mignonette = 80 - mnaged to give some away to a neighbour when she invited me over for tea.
    16 Veg spaghetti
    8 courgettes
    24 sweet pepper
    48 gardeners delight tom
    6 tumbling toms
sweetcorn not come up yet despite warm easter
+ other stuff like spuds, beans + peas
Only have 4 small veg plots 3 of which are full up already!

When i was at tea with the neighbours, i was complaining that a lovely cherry blossom tree at the end of our street had been pulled down by developers and my neighbours said most people would be glad to see it gone as the flowers make too much mess when they fall off!!!

    Is it me?

Not many people appreciate nature anymore, nodwah. They'd rather look at a strip of concrete than a pretty tree because the concrete doesn't create "messy" blossoms!

On another note, is your sweetcorn planted under cloches or in a greenhouse? I think it's still too cold to plant in the open ground. According to this source, soil temp should be 80-95F for best germination.

Have you grown Gardener's Delight before? I am trying a couple for the first time this year, but only have room for 9 or so indeterminate tomatoes (I'm growing in pots)... 48! You must have a huge garden. I'm jealous.

Hi, Cat! Carrot seeglings are a bit tricky to identify, but once you spot them, you can't miss them  This is them:

If you Google ****seedling and look at *images* you'll get pics that you need.

As for dandelions - where are they - lawn, paving, between other plants? Are you OK with chemicals?

Looking good with your veg  :T Did you grow the tumbling tom from seed, or are they plants you bought?

Good point! I've had no juy growing sweetcorn outside, so now confine it to my polytunnel (which helps with pollenation, too).

The weather has been lovely up to now, but we still may have frost  This happened when DH and I were children (about 30 years ago). Warm spring, then snow    at Easter.

Penpen - the dandilions are everywhere!!! Put down some weed and feed a couple of years ago on my lawn, and it killed everything!!! Finally have some more grass, loads of dandilions, but i think ive too many to get rid of (end up with no grass again) but would like to get rid of the ones around the edges, ive tried pulling them up, but they always break off leaving thoise horrible roots!!!
The shoots where my carrots should be dont look like your picture - think they may be weeds, and the carrots havnt happened - do you think it would be worth planting some more, or am i too late?
