The other week, a young woman (about 23) went through the self scan I was on. She had two packs of nappies on the pushchair - one over each handle and didn't scan them. I said to her 'you forgot the nappies' and she said 'I bought them in Boots'.

The thing was these nappies were our own brand ones and could not possibly bought them from Boots. If I wasn't that observant - she could have walked off with £12 of nappies unpaid for

I hope she was prosecuted and not just allowed to pay for them.
  • OMG cant believe that you begrudge some one a few grapes especial from some one like MR T OR MR A they charge you a fortune for grapes. lidles are very good for grapes

How about paying for the food you eat, instead of being a knob and stealing?

Just because something is expensive doesn't mean you can steal it. It's still theft!
  • I am an evil parent. My son, is NOT allowed to eat or drink anything while we are shopping (he is 23 months) I dont understand why adults and children feel the need to do so. Medical reasons/pregnancy baring, I just feel it is wrong to consume something before its been paid for
  • I have never seen anyone eat grapes at the supermarket but probably don't pay enough attention. I do sometimes see parents allow kids to eat things which I presume they'll pay for by scanning wrapper - never done this myself but knowing what it's like trying to shop with hungry children distracting you, it seems like a sensible idea!

My cousin works as a security guard for Tesco and this comes up daily, it's actually his pet peeve. He deals with it like this...

He will watch you eat your grapes, he will wait for you to get to the checkout. When you get to the checkout he will approach you with a full bag of grapes which will be weighed and charged for in full. You can either pay for them and keep the half eaten bag you have in your trolley (the full bag goes back on the shelf) or you can be ejected and banned from the store.

    Its that simple.
Its theft, there is no condoning it. You are buying goods based on weight and removing some of that weight before getting to the checkout. Thats theft, no matter which way you dress it up.
  • Have to agree with taking a strong line on people who think they can eat grapes for free (charged in full 1st time and banned from store on repeat) - they are the part of the reason I have to pay up to £4 a kilo

Repeat offenders are banned from store, though he's had very few people do it twice. They tend to get a little embarrassed at the checkout when confronted.

It's people from all walks of life that do it as well especially old ladies apparently.
  • Yes I've often seen people eating grapes, old people too! It boils my blood when I see this happening - Theft of course. As for letting children eat food on the way round - bring your own snacks - it really isn't difficult! All it needs is a little foresight!

Same here. Either there's some exaggeration going on, or the OP is very unlucky to repeatedly see the grape grabbers on her visits to the supermarket.

I occasionally give my son something to eat when in the supermarket. Usually when I'm running late and things haven't gone to plan. I really don't think the supermarkets would mind as long as all items are paid for. In fact, if it means more money in their tills, I bet they'd actively encourage it.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

Ive never seen anyone munching on grapes as the OP has described, i have found empty boxes of things eg a pregnancy kit box (why steal, you can get them for free cant you), i have been on the till where the parents have given they're kids something to eat/drink and have kept the wrapper/carton to then scan and throw away.
