Greedy grapes

Why is it when ever i go to the supermarket dosent matter which one , when i go to buy some grapes there is always someone who thinks they have the god given right to stand there eating half of the grapes on display , why do they think they should be exempt from paying for them if they want them for free so badly they should go and grow there own ! what they are doing is shoplifting / stealing and i was always under the impression that was a criminal offence ! So when i go to get a bag of grapes the weight is always shorter than stated on the bag because some greedy person has eaten them . Rant over goodbye.

  • I once saw a bloke with his missus, they sounded quite well to do and were dressed very nicely with a lot of nice stuff in their trolley. He walked around eating a bag of grapes that he hadn't paid for and when there were a handful of grapes left, he said "put these back, I'm full now" to his missus. What a cheek! Found the funny side but it is quite a cheeky thing to do!
  • Years ago when I worked in a supermarket, I could always tell who had been eating their grapes on the way around. If it was the pre-weighed bag then there's no problem but if it was a bag for weighing then we all had a little trick of resetting the scales to weigh far higher than usual. A kilo of grapes is surprisingly expensive, and they daren't complain because then they'll be called out (which we did) for trying to steal the grapes.

I'm not condoning anyone eating grapes (I also hate to see empty bottles of cola or the like, or frozen items dumped on any shelf) but if you did call them out, how could you prove they themselves had eaten them? It could have been someone else before they'd even picked them up and put them in the trolley.

Is this something us customers need to look out for? Checkout assistants taking it upon themselves to reset the scales?
  • I wonder what would happen if a clever checkout assistant reset the scales when someone from trading standards was buying something or doing a bit of sampling??

I think the shops should stop the people doing this and deal with the theft...rough justice from a checkout assistant isn't the right way to put things right IMHO
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

Never seen anyone snacking in Waitrose but getting the weight paid for is another reason to use Ocado.

Its not just grapes I have seen customers eat without paying. Here are some food I have seen customers do the same as the grapes:
. Multipack crisps - take one packet and leaving the bag minus one bag on the shelf
. Chicken pieces from the hot chicken counter. Seen the bag with the bones thrown on the shelves
. Pick n mix (I have been guilty of this many years ago) - fill the cup and eat a handful of sweets around the store

We do get customers at work that eat/drink around the store and hand me the wrapper or bottle to scan. If they have consumed the whole thing, I bin the packaging. If not, just hand back to the customer.

I wouldn't be surprised if people do..
  • Me neither, but the attitude of 'It's ok, 'cos nasty evil Tesco make £millions and are only there to take all my hard earned cash, they won't notice a few little bits not paid for ' isn't really on, is it?

I bet people wouldnt condone the same at a local greengrocers (apart from the fact you'd probably caugh red handed :rotfl:)
