Thought I'd introduce myself here, having just worked my way through all the fab advice on the previous 16 pages!

Recently got engaged and we're just about to start seriously planning the wedding, so I'm sure I'll be back here often for tips. I'm hoping we can get everything sorted for a wedding in September this year, but it will depend on whether we can get a good venue and the registrar booked. It'll be pretty small and low-key - my sister's wedding a few years ago cost about £15k and I don't think I can compete with that so I'm going for something a bit more laid back and informal.

It probably won't be the cheapest wedding of the year (I'm fortunate in having parents who'll be able to contribute a fair bit, and we've got some savings too) but I'm hoping that we can do it in for under £5k. We started as we mean to go on by getting my engagement ring for £200 secondhand from ebay. Total bargain as we took it to be valued and the jeweller said it'd probably sell for about £1500 in the shops, and that even the raw materials for it would be more than we paid!

Another area where we hope to save is the honeymoon - we'll probably use the Trailfinders wedding list service posted upthread and ask guests to contribute to the cost of the honeymoon instead of buying toasters/crockery etc that we don't really need.

Anyway, I'm going on so I'll stop for the moment. It's just really exciting making all the plans! Have to start looking for a dress, soon - yay!

Biggest money saver I've found, is to have your wedding on a week day (Mon-thurs). This alone is saving us about 30% on our reception alone........

If kilts are the same as other kids clothes these days, surely he'll fit fine in an 18 month old's kilt..........

How long til your wedding? Maybe worth trying the kilt on him now?

There you go! And being Scottish, I bet he's a bruiser already! (my other half's godson is part Scottish, also 11 months old, and is a real lump! Not fat but just solid and tall already!)

Good luck with finding something and the wedding - the Anvil Hall is fantastic. Wish I was getting married there but it's just so far away!

RE: a make up artist try the local colleges ,the 3rd yr students could do as good a job for a fraction of the price

and if you dont like the trial you dont have to go ahead and have them do it on the day
