I got married a couple of years ago (second time) and was horrified by the price of wedding cakes.
I bought mine from Marks and Spencers, decorated it up a bit with flowers and bought a nice stand for it. It looked lovely and was really cheap, in comparison to some I had seen.
Everyone thought it was lovely, and it tasted great too.
You could also, hire a chocoalte fountain instead of a cake...which would also work out cheaper. When life throws you lemons...put them in a gin and tonic !!0 -
After looking into devon weddings a bit more i have decided not too do it and decided to do gretna green instead. Has anyone got any experience of this?

Friends of ours did last year, and it was beautiful. The venue for the ceremony was fantastic. I'll try and find out what it was called0

In Edinburgh, for a weekday attendance, it is an additional £150. Perhaps a different registry office will charge less/different?
If you still want to do it all in one location, a cheaper alternative might be to contact your former university - or any university you like. A friend got married at Aberdeen and my OH's cousin got married at Oxford. Alumni (graduates) get discounted rates for university chapels and you can hire halls/rooms cheaply. If it's during the hols you can also stay in uni accommodation.
I think we paid £220 for the registrar to attend our venue on a weekday in Birmingham, and it would have been £240 at the weekend. That was last summer.0 -

I am interested to know how much people would spend on average on one wedding favour? I guess it would depend partly on how many people you are inviting to your wedding, so an indication of how much you would spend per 50 people would be great.
Your thoughts would be very much appreciated!
I wanted to keep it to under £1 per person. In the end we got approx. 400 sticks of lettered rock (with our names through it) for £235, so there was plenty for both daytime and evening guests, AND for them to take extra sticks home for the kids and for us to send to people who hadn't been able to make it. We actually only had 90-odd guests at the event so it cost more than £1 a head in that respect, but much less if you count up the cost per stick!
EDIT: Someone PM'd me to ask the source of my rock so I thought I'd post it here: The Rockshop in Morecambe, http://www.the-rock-shop.co.uk/. However, be warned that they did completely screw up our order! First they didn't acknowledge receipt of the order (which I'd both emailed AND sent by post), and when I called up it turned out that they'd mislaid it, and then they got it mixed up with another order from someone else with the same surname, not realising that the two orders were for two separate weddings for people with different first names. Fortunately I'd set a delivery deadline about 2.5 weeks before the wedding so we still got the rock in time - so if you use them then I suggest you do the same, and keep pestering them to make sure that they are remembering about you!0 -
The Anvil Hall is in Gretna itself. We looked round it but decided we wanted to be married in Gretna Green instead.
If you want a traditional anvil wedding in an original blacksmiths forge, this is the place to go in Gretna Green. There is more information on their website:
http://www.gretnagreen.com/
You can either get married over the anvil in the forge as runaway couples would have found it in the 1700's, or in different private rooms depending on your requirements.
I can also recommened this hotel which is in Gretna:

The rooms are very comfortable and spacious and the gardens are fantastic. Here I go again on my own....0 -
Mup wrote:Hi everyone
Can anyone recommend somewhere to get nice but cheap place cards for use on tables at reception?
I'm hoping to print direct onto card but wonder if you can get 'pre-scored' ones online (or cheaper shops like Stationary Box or The Works etc).
Thanks!
Mup.
Get them from ebay! There are 100 on there for "buy it now" at £3.99, plus about £1.50 postage and packing. They're prescored. Just type in "place cards" into the search on www.ebay.co.uk
By the way, that's where I've got mine from!Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 declared0 -
A friend (and former colleague) of mine is a keen amateur photographer and wants to get established as a wedding photographer. My husband and I (who got married last August, with lots of help from this thread!) have been dressing up in our wedding outfits again today and doing some modelling for her, to help her build up a portfolio. I didn't know last summer that she was into photography, or I would have asked her to do our wedding!
She's keen to do a couple of weddings this summer to further build up her skills and portfolio. She'll do it at cost, which will mean that she won't be liable if there's any dissatisfaction with the results, but she is a bit of a perfectionist so I'm sure you'll get fantastic value for money! She's recently gone fully digital and is still getting to grips with her new equipment, so would prefer not to do any weddings until May/June time, but if you're getting married earlier and are interested then I can put you in touch - just PM me.
I don't have today's pictures yet but should have them in a week or two, so can let you have a look at a few then if you PM me. You don't need to give me your email address, I'll just PM you back with a link - but I'd better not post it on here as that could be construed as advertising.
Oh, location info would be helpful, wouldn't it! She's based in Tamworth so will do weddings around the West Midlands / South Staffs area.0
