Well, I got to about page 17 of this thread before I skipped to the end!
I'm getting married in January next year (inviting about 100 people) and money-saving bits so far include (and lots of these have been mentioned already):
*Dress - my friend is making my wedding dress as a present to me. It's going to be green and regency style! I've just bought my wedding underwear on ebay for £1.99! BF will splash out on a really nice suit which he can wear again and again. Groomsmen can wear what they want - I expect we'll coordinate it all somehow.
*Bridesmaids - I'm having 3 of my friends, and my sister, as bridesmaids and instead of splashing out on dresses for them, I've just told them a colour (red) and they are all going to get their own dresses in their own style which they can wear again and again
*Venue - we are getting married in a church because it's cheap and atmospheric (we're planning on filling the place with candles since it's a winter wedding - you can buy candles in bulk on many websites REALLY cheaply). Reception will be at a venue in the town where you just hire the space and then do everything else yourself. So it's only £800 to hire the town hall!
*Ceremony Music - a friend of mine is a concert organist, and loads of my friends are musicians so this is sorted. Hand-picked choir.
*Reception Music - my boyfriend is a sound engineer and has lots of musician friends so DJ is sorted (although I'm trying to persuade him that a barn dance beforehand is a good idea!)
*Favours - what are these? I've never been to a wedding where they hand out favours!
*Cake - good friend's mum is making for free
*Car - bf's dad has a classic Jag so will be using that!
*Catering - I like the tips in this thread which suggest contacting the local college for waiting staff. I'll definitely try that out as I know the local college runs a course on hospitality - thanks for that one. Food-wise, I'm getting relatives to contribute a special dish if they can, but also I've been looking at the Waitrose website and they do canapes and other food at very reasonable prices!
*Booze - definitely going to do a booze cruise with enough for all our guests. We won't expect them to be buying booze
*Invites - bf's sister is v artistic (is a fashion designer) and is designing the invites. I don't expect to spend any money at all on invites/order of service. I'll use work to cheekily print them out!
*Misc - there are other tips I've picked up from this thread which I like esp. buttonholes from charity shop, and making own table decorations.
Sorry - this is v long!
Wonder if you can help please....
We're looking at getting married in a church but we're not sure of the costs - could I ask what you're paying pls? Sorry if this is rude!
Also - who will be driving the Jag on the day? My GF's dad has a Jag but obviously doesn't want to be driving it on the day!0 -
Hi there may i say all very good advice!.. : ) does anyone know a free wedding favor sample site please?
Many thanks0 -
Cross posting this from the debt board, in case anyone is interested?
I am looking for a couple who are getting married, probably towards the end of 2007, or in the beginning of 2008 (ish) who would not otherwise have a photographer for their wedding day.
I would shoot the wedding for free and they'd get a disc of images free too.
As it's free I can't travel too far so the wedding needs to be close to Stafford or perhaps Luton at a push (have a mate in Luton who I could stay with and I know the area well).
I am NOT offering this to anyone who can afford a photographer but would rather have a freebie. I only want a genuine couple who would otherwise have no record of their day. Hence me posting here because I have definitely seen some people in debt saying they are due to get hitched soon. I would love to be able to "give something back" for the good advice I have had in the past, and this seems a good way to do it.
This would be my first full wedding on my own and I can make no guarantees that any of the photos will come out and that it wouldn't go disastrously wrong! Hence me wanting to shoot for a couple who would definitely have no photographer otherwise.
I have however second shot four weddings so far and have another four lined up for this year to second shoot. My husband and myself have a website for our wedding photography, and many of the images in our gallery have been shot by myself if you want to be nosey.
Fingers crossed the wedding I do will then be used by me to build up a portfolio. So there's something in it for me too. I am not entirely altruistic!
I am flexible in style, and tend to do a combination of reportage and formal posed shots. I will also be a member of the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers soon (when I can scrape the membership fee together!).
If anyone knows a couple this would be of interest to, please drop me a line or reply to this thread, thanks. Officially Debt Free Nov 2012 :beer:0 -
Hi gorgoeusnesses!
This thread has been quiet for a while!
Just thought I'd update on a few more things we've thought of since my last post to keep costs down...
1. Instead of a guest book (£30+?!) we've bought a massive canvas from a cheapy craft shop for £6 and we're going to put a gold border round it and write 'Richard and Vicki, 16th December 2007' at the top, pop it on an easel (sp?) or hang it somewhere with loads of nice pens so our guests can write on that instead. Then we'll put it up in our house and be able to see everyone's lovely comments rather than (never bothering to) get the book out. Bargain.
2. Have set up our wedding list with honeymoney with a discount code and so everyone can buy us contributions for the honeymoon (which isn't very MSE tbh as over Xmas and NY). Really helpful and professional and they've sent us loads of cards.
3. Loved the charity pin badge idea for favours so I spoke to two charities close to our hearts and they've let us have 50 (enough for day guests) for free and they've sent us boxes to put at the bar for people's loose change instead. We're going to pin them through the placecards and write a message about why we've done that instead of expensive favours on the back.
4. Check out GT Decorations on ebay and the web. They've got loads of fantastic decorations for the venues that are really realistic looking, stylish and above all, cheap! We're decorating all the mantle pieces in our country house with these and intead of flower table centerpieces i've bought long strands of ivy (a theme for our Xmas wedding) and am going to wind them around church candles stood on a mirror (£3.00 for 4 from Ikea). Look fab for our late afternoon wedding.
Keep your tips coming girlies! x x0 -

Why not save on expensive photo albums and make your own: http://www.photobox.co.uk/widestatic/books.html I've tried photobox before and I have to say that the quality is amazing and they deliver very fast!0
