Really, how do you know what stated what ??

I did not sign or see anything from the council.

I'm making a few assumptions here.

Firstly, the fees for a marriage are given here . I've assumed they've charged based on the £58.50 figure (which may have just changed?).

Secondly, it does clearly say these are non-refundable.

The key contract is with the castle. If it says something along the lines of "we make the arrangements with the council's registrars on your behalf and you are responsible for the fees" then you're on the hook.

I'm a little surprised because when I got married we booked the venue, then separately went and booked the registrar - we then paid an arrangement fee to the registrar and a final fee nearer the date. I suspect arrangements could be different in Scotland: they usually are!

    yes you have made assumptions.

no the contract states that I must pay the fees myself and in fact last week we received the bill from the council. I did not pay cos I knew we were cancelling, I did not read the t&c nor did I sign anything.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. When you say you didn't sign anything, I assume you mean with the council rather than the castle?

If I understand this right, you had a contract with the castle, who said they'd arrange things for you, with you covering the cost of these fees. They did so, you cancelled, so you are on the hook for the fees. They happen to be non-refundable.

I'm going to try to get my wedding day undies in the sales. any suggestion of where to go?

ps I'm rather well endowed, that tends to cause me a problem, so hints based on that will be well received....

    Hello, Great Thread!

I wondered if you have any tips for what to wear as a guest at a wedding (my brothers wedding). I'd love to wear a dress (because I never normally wear dresses) but I don't know what would be suitable, plus I would need sandals and something to cover up the tattoos on the top of my arm. It's going to be a summer wedding and I am size 12 (or 14 - depends where I shop at).

    Any ideas please? :)

A few years ago I got an outfit from Debenhams which is a silk knee length dress and a matching jacket. It has now done 3 weddings and will be worn at two more next year!! I was lucky that I picked up a hat for £5 from M&S.

The jacket makes the outfit look more formal, suitable for a "sister of the groom" :D, but it does depend what sort of wedding it is. (obviously!) You could also get a pashmina/shawl to cover up your tatoos, if that's what you want to do. I've also bought excellent shawls from Ebay!

I suggest that you go to a shop that can help with personal shopping eg Debenhams/John Lewis/House of Fraser. They can help to find the perfect outfit for you and suggest what colour of accesories you could wear with it - and give you examples of what they sell.

    I hope this helps.

i wore a 50s style dress with wrap for a wedding this summer gone,

only cost me £15 on ebay ( brand new!) and everyone there commented how lush it was and asked many times was it from monsoon :D lmao

depends how formal a wedding it is to be honest ?

ive *never* worn a hat as a guest ! always tend to have my hair put up and then wear a fresh flower in it or pretty pins etc :)

per una / monsoon / designers @ debenhams / coast all have lovely outfits suitable for a wedding :)

Can anyone suggest good venues for a civil wedding? Me & my partner are not at all religous so dont want to get married in a church. But getting married in a hotel seems soooooo expensive as you have to have everything there ie wedding/meal/reception. Everywhere ive looked seems to be around the £3000-£5000 mark!

Also it makes it hard to money-save as you have to use their catering services and bar. Does any one have any ideas? Im going mad!!!

a lot of people just book their favourite restaurant etc and pay per meal for food and whatever drinks consumed :)

so you dont have to have "packages" which can be very expensive

worth ringing round some local venues which look / sound nice and seeing if they have a function room

or if they have the outside space, you could have a marquee put up :)

OR why not have the ceremony in a registry office ? ( some lovely ones out there ) and then the receptions in a hotel etc ?

by having a later ceremony you could get away with only feeding people the once ;) therefore making a saving :D

alternatively i know people who have just hired a hall and then done the catering themselves or got someone in to do it

you can then hire a bar ,your own Dj ,decorate yourself etc ,thus enabling you to shop about and save money hopefully :)

    good luck with the planning

Well....I went to the sales today in search of my two bridesmaids dresses and guess what?! Could I find ANYTHING that remotely looked like the dresses I wanted? Could I heck?! Nothing, nada, zilch! What to do now?!
