How much would you spend/did you spend on your wedding?

Recently I went to a cousins wedding and was shocked on how they spent nearly £50k, though it was her family and grooms family that put up and whilst the limo ride over at teh country manor was a hoot I would never spend or expect to be spent on my big day.
Is that a pretty standard amount to spend? How much did you spend? I'm thinking just something simple for myself as I would prefer the main funds go into buying our first home/raising our kids

If I exclude honeymoon and hen/stag do, I'm looking at around £9.5k, for 130ish guests, of which I've been offered generous contributions towards a few aspects, meaning I'll likely end up spending nearer £6k. This is neither skimping nor extreme extravagance. I have everything I was really keen on, no worry on numbers.
I could have done it much cheaper, but by saving on things I wasn't fussed on, like having no wedding car, and choosing a hot and cold buffet rather than 3 course meal, I've afforded a vintage bus to transport people, and a fair amount of free drinks for people.0 -
We spent around £8-£9k for 40 day & 85 evening guests, including first honeymoon and spends for the second (wedding gift vouchers paid for the actual cost of the second honeymoon). This also included accomodation costs for DH's parents, his best man, my bridesmaid & my 2 sons.0

About £1500, just close family for the registry office wedding, and meal afterwards then a buffet in a pub in the evening for anyone else who wanted to come along and celebrate with us.'' Ok Marge, if anyone asks, you require 24-hour nursing care; Lisa's a clergyman; Maggie is seven people and Bart was wounded in Vietnam ''0

If £50k is a "standard" amount, then I'm obviously a cheapskate!!0 -
£50k????
Dear lord, if I had that much there's no way I'd [STRIKE]waste[/STRIKE] spend it on a wedding! That's almost half my mortgage!
(but if you got it and can afford it and its what you want to do...then your choice!
)
in response to your question, h2b and I are planning a wedding abroad next year and have set our budget to about £5-6k. We reckon £3k for holiday, £1k for wedding bits out there (ceremony, legal shiz, photography, decorative arches..you get the idea), then £750 to inc dress, rings, grooms shirt n shorts and the rest is for helping any family that may wish to join us out there (we know it ain't cheap!) and for a reception/knees up/holiday sideshow for friends and family. Rough numbers but we think we should get what we want (n hopefully more!) with that
Change is inevitable...nothing stays the same forever

About 15-20K that's for 80 guests.
A few things bumped the bill up but we have been saving for about 3 years so it's not too bad.
My mum has paid for a couple of things. MIL2B has been of no help lolFirst Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0 -
£3500 for the day. No way in hell I would spend £50k! They must obviously be trying to compensate for something! What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine..0

I cannot tell you the word that sprang to mind when I read '£50k' because it was a bad one!
The average cost of a UK wedding is apparently £20k & it would KILL me to spend that, but then I suppose if someone has parents who can pay for the whole thing it's a little different, it's a lot easier to spend other people's money isn't it!
My wedding is currently coming in at just under £10k, we are paying for about two thirds of that & have been very lucky that our parents have offered us some towards the day, we could have saved a bit extra here & there, but this is with having everything we want involved. We decided to have our wedding on a Monday which has saved us about £5k & I fretted about that initially because I thought people wouldn't come, but £5k is a lot of money!
Spending 5 times that much is frankly bloody insanity, in my humble opinion! :eek:0 -
I think it very much depends on whether they are now 50k in debt, if it was easily available to them, was it everything they wanted etc.
I wouldn't spend that much (to answer the question, ours is around 3k) but if others choose to I don't see it as they are 'wasting' their money or should have put it towards something else.
It wouldn't shock me, just the same as if someone spent less than £100 and did it at a register office. As long as Bride and Groom have a fabulous time and didn't rob a bank to do it then I'd be happy for them.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0
