Don't the people who've been arguing with the networks have insurance with these networks, ...
Are you saying that the majority of people insure their mobiles? Personally I will never buy it because it's a very poor value for me and other careful people. I don't want to pay for careless people that regularly have "things like this sorted by Orange Care without a problem".

Well that's your choice. However someone who doesn't insure their mobile for accidental damage can't complain if the retailer/network won't repair the phone for free, when it appears for all the world to have suffered accidental damage. The S3 may or may not have a problem that warrants a no-questions-asked replacement, but until that is admitted by Samsung or otherwise proven, you can't expect a retailer to replace damaged phones on the basis of internet rumours.

And just to clarify, "always" does not mean the same thing as "regularly". I simply meant that I have never been refused a claim.

I have made two claims for accidental damage in nine years - once when I carelessly sat on my phone and once when someone ran into me when they weren't looking and their heavy bag broke the screen of my TyTn II that was in my pocket. On both occasions Orange Care replaced the phone, no (or few) questions asked.
  • Regardless of care and attention accidents happen. I'll be covering my new iphone for at least the first 6 months of ownership. If anything happens to it while it's new then I would certainly cry for about a week and then start saving up for a repair/replacement.

How anyone dropping any product can claim its a warranty issue is beyond my understanding .
Drop a phone and it does not break you are lucky as its usually from a reasonable height not just a few inches .

I have a LloydsTSB Premier Account which costs £25 per month but includes travel insurance, mobile phone insurance for 2 phones AA Breakdown cover and a number of other benefits.

WOW, you seriously pay £300 a year for benefits worth about £150 or less?!?!? :(

    (sorry, back on topic....)

OP, I think you are correct and all the idiots replying to you don't know what they are talking about.

If I was you, I would start a claim in the European Courts and get sales of all S3's stopped until this problem is fixed... The claim might cost you a few hundred thousand but you'll get all that back when you win, plus a refund on the phone too... get cracking, you have my full support.... :p

I have a similar problem with my new Samsung s3 except I never dropped it the screen just cracked . I have a protective case , screen protector and the screen just cracked and it only 6wks old . I looked up deals on the web and it indeed seems Samsung have a problem with screens but are not admitting anything .
I do ave insurance through my bank but the claims process is very long winded and the are probably going to give me a reconditioned phone .
I am really upset , had lads of phones in my lifetime and never damaged any of them , always have case and take care of them .
It has totally put me off Samsung and I have no intention of buying a new Samsung phone .
Vodafone have also been very unhelpful , ESP there call centre who keep insisting I dropped the phone, which seems to be everyone's get out clause. The phone is getting more damaged everyday and the cheapest repair I can get so far is £100 that will ake two weeks when I am paying line rental and have no phone .

Seeing this from the networks POV, it does sound very fishy... "I didn't drop it guv, it just cracked all on its own, honest...."

I am also shocked that you would rather pay £100 to have the phone fixed, than claim on your insurance "because its long winded" and you might get a reconditioned phone....

Paying £100 over filling in a form or two... I know which I would rather do...

Plus whats wrong with a reconditioned phone? What do you think yours would be classed as after having the glass replaced... you guessed it, reconditioned... Plus most "reconditioned" phones are just customer returns where someone had it a day, didn't like it so returned it under distance selling regs. It would still be under warranty and the "reconditioning" is usually just a factory reset. It should be in "as new" condition....

    Madness....

What about higher insurance premiums in years to come?

At least you know exactly what happened to the phone and what was repaired/replaced.

No, it shouldn't be in 'as new' condition and reconditioned phones from insurance companies are usually repaired faulty/broken phones from their 'pool'.

You do realise that insurance tends to come with an excess, that couple with next years premium increasing means it may not be sensible to claim.

I'm not sure whether people are talking about independent or network insurance, but my Orange Care has been around £6 per month for years. The excess increased, but only once in my time with Orange and then mainly for iphones. lIRC it's only about £15 for anything except iphones, which is not too bad if you require a replacement and if your phone is relatively new and high-end.
