  • Book has now livened up and is very interesting. Still some equations but far less abstract now and the earlier bit is falling into place more. After Mr E's suggestions I also downloaded The Millionaire Next Door and also another book called The Richest Man In Babylon.

I am also reading, in case anyone is remotely bothered, a book called Fat Chance about the way sugar is in nearly every foodstuff we consume and is fuelling our obesity and major associated illnesses. Shocking, eye-opener.

On the money front, this is already a spendy week and its only Sunday! Had to replace a duvet today for my son, and bought some other bits for the house. Have a christening to attend shortly, so bits for that. Also bought most of our Xmas stuff now, so only a couple of bits which I want to get done by Friday so from now until then, apart from daily living expenses and usual bills, there is nothing else to pay for until end of December. That's the plan anyway!

Hi southern dave , I'm impressed you are nearly done Xmas wise :T

I also read the millionaire next door, the PDF is lurking about on Gallygirls thread a couple of months back. I found it very interesting, and kind of goes against everything I have been brought up to believe by my parents, who very much enjoy the finer things in life, always bought brand new cars etc. but Dad is still having to work to keep up the same level of spending, I just don't get it really.

I hope your son is ok, best wishes :)

  • Long week over. Thought we'd try sugar free diet and see if my son's condition improved any after reading a frightening book about a) just how much of the stuff we eat/drink and b) the negative effects it can have on your health.

Sad to report, no change in health but a much grumpier household than normal. Concluded that means a) we are not eating as much of the stuff as I thought, b) we are all thoroughly addicted and are withdrawing like junkies or c) that book was wrong about the ill effects of sugar. Hmmmm

Anyway in attempt to [STRIKE]overcompensate[/STRIKE] normalise, tonight we have bought a bottle of wine and a slab of chocolate to devour. Pushed the shopping budget a little over, or maybe it was the large bottle of Jack I snuck in the trolley, but hey ho, you have to have something to cheer the autumnal nights with, eh?

Money wise, we are pushing along nicely and the effects of turning off the dripping taps that are direct debits, is really noticing in our account now. We busted the sub £70k barrier and are rapidly approaching the lower £69k. With not a lot to pay for aside from the usual between now and the end of the year, I am hoping to be into the low £68k by then, fingers crossed.

Finally, I finished the book with the equations in. I liked the argument he puts forward and I can see from the evidence prevented it is do-able, but feel in my life, I have gone past the stage where I can comfortably put it into practice. Additionally, I did not undertsand the 'how to' finer points, purel because I have a complete mental block with maths, algebra and equations and the entire two or three chapters realting to the details of his system was utterly beyond my comprehension. A good book if you get maths and are young enough to implement the ideas.

The next recomended book, The Richest Man In Babylon is BRILLIANT. So simple (which I like) and readable and true. Should be mandatory reading for kids at school. Thanks for letting me find this one!

    Glad you're enjoying the reading.

Haha - I'd never get away with sneaky JD in the shopping trolley! Have you tried the single barrel one? Very enjoyable and you can occasionally find it with a discount in the larger supermarkets
  • Yes, I had a bottle from Santa last year, at least I think it was! Was very nice and how's this for odd: the bottle has a date samped in the cork from when it was decanted and by pure chance, it was my birthday! Maybe will get another this year?!

I also had a little bottle of the Honey one, you tried that? Was horrible mixed with anything, but taken neat and, in your parlance, wee drams, it was very nice.

I'd like to try a bottle of this version next:

And if you scroll down that page, a bewildering variety of specials to sample. Mmmmm, whiskey!

    What a strange coincidence!
I also had a little bottle of the Honey one, you tried that?

Yup - wasn't really to my taste - tasted too much like Glayva or other honey/honeyed liqueurs for me.

Wee drams always appreciated, but I tend to drink something a bit more local. It would seem churlish not to! ;)
  • I have had a good few tries of Scotch and Scottish whiskey but just cannot get into it, I think its my sweet tooth. I can stand the odd Irish drop, Jamesons and the like, but have yet to have a Scotch proper that I like. I like Jim Beam Black and JD best though. Always worth trying other though!
  • Just joining in the booze discussion - I really don't like whiskey but I have tried a clear whiskey from the Isle of Man and it was fab :T
