Hi All,
Like everyone else, I'm feeling the credit crunch at the moment. I've pretty much stopped visiting Mr Tesco, instead we go to the market every weekend for fruit/veg and meat and I've dusted off my bread maker (I too LOVE my panasonic!)I just have to buy gallons of milk for my 2 small children during the week. Honestly, I am wondering if it would be cheaper to just buy a cow!
So.. I was wondering if you all have favourite old style/budget recipes in your family?
One of the things I have been doing is buying mince in a larger quantity than usual, cooking it all up with onions, garlic etc, then dividing into 2 or 3 saucepans and making:
1) Bolognaise
2) Chilli
3) Cottage pie
They all have grated carrot added (extra veg for children) tins of tomatoes etc. The chilli has extra kidney beans than I used to use to bulk it up and I add swede etc or whatever appeals to the cottage pie, it's great with some beans.
I then freeze them in bags and can easily reheat when I get home from work and just cook some pasta, rice or potato.
I'm still new to all this, so would love to hear if you have favourites!

I realised today that I now need to meal plan if I am to keep the food bill to a reasonable level, as OH expects a proper dinner each night whereas on my own I used to pick at bits or cobble something together.
So I started doing a list of all the different meals I can do. And I only have about 22!
This doesn't seem much to choose from, especially as they are often variations on a theme like veg risotto, chicken risotto, etc.
So I wondered how many different meals you cook regularly, and if you had any ideas for cheap and easy meals I can add to my list. OH doesn't like wet sauces although he does like my beef bourguignon, and he won't eat cheese.
Today's shop cost me £52 including two bottles of £3.99 wine (on offer) which I think is OK, I just don't want to bore him to death with the same meals all the time.
All ideas and tips welcome!:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

'Expects' a proper dinner! Not 'hopes for'? How many will he be cooking, me wonders.
Not sure how many meals I cook but I go through phases with meals. I'll cook something every week for a few weeks and then, for no reason, stop. Then one of the kids will say, " Why don't we have x any more?" and I'll start cooking it again. 22 seems like a good start to me!0 -
Firm fav's in our house are-chilli (i make a tom bolognese base in a large batch then put some in another pan and add chilli powder and kidney beans then freeze and also use some for lasagne. Also chicken with cream and m/rooms (cook chicken then add chicken stock, m/rooms and cream and simmer-yum with rice or pots.)
What about corned beef hash,mince and pot pie,fajitas, tacos. Pizza's and jacket spud, quiche with new pots and salas, braised steak and mash, crispy chicken in baguettes, fish and chips, meatballs and pasta, roasted veg and cous cous.

Corned beef wellington always raises a laugh.
I want to add that I said I'd do the cooking - he has lived alone for years and is OK at cooking but I'd rather do it so I get food I like!
I'd forgotten toad in the hole and corned beef hash and I know he likes those so that's 24! :rotfl:
Maybe it IS enough - I am just feeling the pressure of having to be a wife!
But keep the ideas coming - I have to go out now but I'll be back.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j
