Car impounded for no insurance, was told by insurance company that we were insured

if it is South Wales Police then a Google search on "South Wales police vehicle seizure" comes up with a PDF link to a document detailing the South Wales Police vehicle seizure policy. It's 8th link on page one. On page 13 of the document it states that all seizure and storage fees are prescribed by statute.
Here is a link to the fees charged by Durham Constabulary:-
https://www.durham.police.uk/recoveredvehicles/storagecharges.php
You can see the daily storage charge is £20 per day for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.
I think (from reading the document I am attaching here) that £20 is what the police get paid. The recovery company that recovers and stores the cars gets paid and they retain some of the money. There is some info on this AR document that says
'The full fee charged by the recoverer is statutory but South Wales Police (SWP) retains only a small proportion of this based on an estimate of the costs incurred by SWP. The remainder of the fee goes partly to the operator who recovered the vehicle and partly to our contractor who acts as a managing agent for the whole service.'
And then:
'South Wales Police received £5.00 from each of the paid statutory fees until July 2010
when the figure increased to £20 from each statutory recovery/seizure.'

OP, this is the South Wales Policy on removing vehicles, you might find it useful:

We are having to pay to get the car yes. A complaint will be put through when we have the insurance certificate back to prove he did actually have insurance when they stopped him. Will soon find out if this will go to court or get dropped when that arrives.0

The storage fees are governed by statute so it doesn't matter if you are in Aberdare or Durham, they will be the same.
What the police earn from this is probably £20 but what the independent storage facility cab actually charge is another matter.
I should imagine they would at least charge another £20 at least on top as they would see no income otherwise would they!0 -

all that can be gathered from that is that the copper was wrong to not call the insurance company or even ask who his insurer was which is helpful as we now have that in black ans white!
Off to try to collect the car now! insurance documents at the ready!0 -

What part of statutory charges are you having difficulty in understanding? The charges are set by the Home Office and they are the same wherever you go. Here is a link to the latest legislation that sets out the charges:-
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2008/2095/regulation/5/made
You should be charged £20 a day for storage, not the £50 you are claiming, but £20."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

Still correctly taken though because no licence was in force at that time.
They may drop the uninsured charge. But still correctly impounded.
You going to collect the licence so that it doesnt get lost or stolen again?
You really are digging a very deep hole.
Do you have a big flowchart with all your lies on it so you can keep track and change the story slightly?
I can see the future, Your right and they are wrong and you just bought a mansion in Hollywood next door to Zeta Jones (FATSO to you and Kirk), With the proceeds of your compensation.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

What is your problem?! he had a licence, still does just not the actual card! He has the paper counterpart so don't know where you think I'm lying or why you think they were right to impound! They impounded it as whether they thought he had insurance or not, they suspended his licence as they thought he was someone else so therefore didn't have a licence to drive home with and was not offered a hort1!
No lies here. Unfortunately all of this is very true and had caused a lot of stress and sleepless nights. We can do without comments like that at this stressful time!
Just lucky I guess that my dads new job doesn't start for another week so my partner can have lifts with him until he changes the address on his licence on Friday. We have been told by dvla we can get insurance today with no issues but just to be on the safe side we are waiting until Friday as we don't need anymore stress after the last few days!0 -
it wasnt correctly taken though was it as the police did not carryout investigative proceedures, it also states that vehicle should not be taken over a technicality, wich was the ID issue, the officer linked the ID issue and came to the conclusion that he was automatically uninsured so in my opnion yes they are entitled to go to the police station and ask for the fee's to be waived wich is why they would need the presence of a solicitor with them to bare some wieght.0

So I guess you didn't go to collect it, choosing to argue over the extra £50/day you said in post #1 it would cost for storage?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards.
