  • Oh I will probably be shot down in flames now but here goes….

I think that the reason behind this:
Not everybody does though. I don't. I don't go out often enough to have/need something nice - and if I had something once it no longer fits. I get invited "somewhere nice" about once every 6-10 years.

Is because of comments like this:
Well, aren't you the rude snob... not everybody's got the money to spend on new things like you have ..... probably to only ever wear them once because they don't get out much.

Maybe they WERE making an effort.

It's just a wedding..... a few brief hours in one day.....

OP some people don’t make an effort unfortunately… there is no excuse for not washing their hair!!! Work clothes (office attire) would be fine or an evening dress and even smart jeans with shoes and a shirt would look nice if clean shaven etc. Heels aren’t necessary…most weddings are summer so nice sandals would be fine.

If the clothes look smart and clean and the person is clean and brushed hair/clean shaven etc then they will look good! Its about effort, not cost and I don’t think the OP was suggesting morning suits for everyone!!

It's another of those things people say about weddings "Oh I don't care so long as my closest friends and family are there" don't bother buying a gift/spending money you can ill afford on an outfit you wouldn't wear again/coming straight from work because you can't afford to take the time off ...we just want you there !

Some people genuinely feel that way .....and others say it and don't mean a word of it-either way as a bride I'd take a very dim view of another guest being so judgemental of my other guests.

Oh well perhaps if it worries you you could write a second cheesy poem to go with the one asking for money as a gift and pop it in with the invite.

Me and my snobby friends will be dressed up to the nines
Please don't attend if you're coming straight from the mines
Although we say we just want you there
Don't you dare turn up in jeans or with messy hair

I have actually seen someone come to a wedding in a onsie, she turned up around 10:30 (uninvited by the bride and groom).

As she came in she said to me "I didn't think anyone would be dressed up so I just popped down for the last hour and a half to spend some time with Dan"

The bride and groom's face (along with others) was a picture, the bride to say the least was not happy at all.... not only because she wasn't invited (they couldn't stand her) but also because she had the "sheer nerve to turn up in a onsie".

Sorry but this made me laugh. Its bad enough seeing folk wearing them in Tesco.

What happened to taking pride in your appearance?

This cracked me up and i kind of wish it was socially acceptable to send out with the invites ... even though i know that wasn't your point!

I do think that its bad manners to not wear smart clothes to a wedding and find it hard to believe that people have nothing suitable.
Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

  • Duchy, I LOVE your poem!

Maybe I am going to get shot down in flames for my comments too........is this an age/generational thing? Obviously I don't know the age of the posters, but to me some comments sound like something my nan might say (SORRY!!)

I would find jeans acceptable to a night do. I wouldn't choose to wear them myself (i love my dresses!) but I'm pretty sure my OH would.

A different angle is that some people have mental health issues (among other things) and so might not be washed and attired properly.

And does anyone else remember the thread where the bride specified no facial hair and a really crazy dress code too?
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

I was a bit surprised that quite a few people turned up in clothes that you would just go out in!

What kind of clothes do you mean, Kaylee? Clothes you would go out round town/nightclubbing or clothes you would go out to the supermarket in?

I really think there's no excuse. Weddings esp you get invites to months in advance I'm sure anyone in that time can pick something up in a charity shop (I've bought loads of nice clothes for less than £5) or even borrow from a friend.
