Guests not trying (outfit)

Options
I recently attended a wedding at a lovely hotel. The groom had tails and waistcoat and his best man and friends all hired suits.
they all looked lovely and the bride had a beautiful dress and the whole thing, bridesmaids and a horse and carriage.
I was a bit surprised that quite a few people turned up in clothes that you would just go out in!
I and a few others had nice dresses, matching accessories and even a fascinator.

I thought it was a bit rude really. The nightime guests didn't make much of an effort either. A few turned up in t shirt and jeans.

and i'm not a snob, far from it, but you would think for a wedding, people would have made the effort!

I don't think guests should be expected to go out and buy or hire top hats and tails, but i would expect people to turn up in smart dress.

One guest at a wedding I was at looked like she was just picked up off the street. She had on a skintight black dress and her hair wasn't even washed.
I was also at a wedding where one of the evening guests turned up in jeans.
  • My husbands family didn't really make an effort, most wore jeans, some in normal lounge around tshirts and one girl even wore a hoody! They are only showing their selves up as all of my friends and family - who had all made a massive effort noticed and were saying how scruffy they all looked.

An uncle of mine got married and his wifes family didn't approve of him, he was about 20yrs older than her. The girls Dad never came the wedding, her Mum did but only 'cos she passed the Church on her way to Asda so she had ordinary everyday clothes on and left her shopping trolley at the back of the Church,

Exactly, its a wedding. Even if I had no money to spend on an outfit I would still be wearing my nicest clothes. To turn up in jeans and a t shirt is just rude. Even Primark do nice dresses for £15.

If it was a case of wearing my jeans or not going... I would be regretfully declining my invitation.

I don't think she was being rude, I personally would never dream of going to any event without putting a bit of effort in to how I was dressed, and none of my male friends would go without at least a shirt on, even if wearing jeans.

I wouldn't expect my guests to buy something especially for my wedding, and doubt the OP means that they should, but everyone has something a little special in their wardrobe...

I'm sure they do if you're 5'5" or more tall and of generous proportions... but not everybody's got a Primark or find their clothes fit them (e.g. no petite range). And £15 for a dress you neither want, nor will use again, is a lot of money for many people.

Doesn't bother me what people were TBH, I'd rather they be comfortable & have fun than wear something they feel stuffy in.

Not everybody does though. I don't. I don't go out often enough to have/need something nice - and if I had something once it no longer fits. I get invited "somewhere nice" about once every 6-10 years. Then there's different seasons, so you might have a nice summer dress and it's a sub-zero winter wedding, so still got nothing.

I splashed out for a wedding in 2006, I've not worn the dress since. If I get invited to another wedding in the next 10 years it won't fit any more as my size/weight changes so often.... and I've no shoes for it, never owned a hat/fascinator, no handbag to go with it either.

The majority of people who may not have "going out clothes" would surely have something that they could wear. Even work clothes - trousers and a blouse or smart top? And you dont necessarily have to buy new clothes, I was pointing out that if you absolutely have nothing to wear then places like Primark are always an option.
