Hang on in there I'm sure your miracle will be along in time. I also want to lose a couple of stone, I had got a stone off before xmas but sadly put half back on! Need to get back on the wagon now, but still feeling ill after too much drinking on new years eve, so not really got it in me today.

I remember watching a really good programme about the science of it all (with a rather attractive dr, but I can't remember his name). The numbers freaked me out - think it was something like only 200 000 sperm get past the first hurdle, then it was done to 20 or something like that by the time they got to the tubes. As we only have about 1% of the 'normal' amount to start with, no wonder we're struggling!

It really is a miracle though. How on earth does any of that make an actual person?!?

I used to think why does the man need 300 million sperm when only one is needed to fertilise the egg (plus if you bonk every second day in BD week, that's like 1200 million). Now I know!

I wouldn't mind so much if we produced more than one egg per month, so there was more than one chance to get it all right.

That's the hardest thing, having to wait four weeks for another chance at it.

although some animals are only fertile at certain times of the year, can you imagine if we were all BDing frantically during a particular month and then if no joy that would be it for another year?

    Hi Ladies,

I'm having a PMA day today (long may it last).

I wasted the latter part of 2011 and most of 2012 by being convinced that I wasn't going to get pregnant so why even try.

2013 has to be different. Even if it seems impossible to get pregnant at the moment there are things that I can change this year to help towards getting pregnant.

I have no cycle to speak of so my main goal has to be to rectify that rather than the big goal of getting pregnant. I see three things that I can work on....

    1) Take vitamins / herbs

I bought some vitamins and herbs ages ago but never took them. It just seemed like so many pills to have to pop per day but I'm going to start taking them.

    2) Track cycles

I gave up tracking my cycles because there wasn't anything positive. I'm going to start again as I'll at least have a record of what my body is doing.

    3) Lose weight

This is the big one (that has been my goal for so long but seems impossible).

At the back end of last year I saw a new Doctor who seemed really helpful and she said she would refer me to a fertility clinic if I could lose some weight. I was previously told that I'd need to lose a LOT of weight before I could be referred anywhere so ended up with the "what's the point" attitude. But now it seems there might be some light at the end of the tunnel so I have to make an effort. So tonight I'm going to go along to a Slimming World class to see what it's all about. I've already booked my Dr's appointment for the end of the month so I have 4 weeks to make a good start at my weight loss to get things progressing.

fannyanna good luck with the weight loss, it's really daunting if there's a lot to lose to get to normal but every little effort is one step closer to the goal.

I find it helpful to set mini goals- 10% of your bodyweight lost is enough to effect your cycle, so I think of it as 10% chunks to make it seem less insurmountable :)

I'm in the giant panda club top-level both on the ovulation once a year, well 5 Times in fifteen months, and the giant part. but no more! I have 9 weeks until my appointment with the gynae, so a sensible 18 goal for that. once that's reached, I'll set the next goal

Hope you caught the eggy code. Sorry if i upset you with the poorly baby talk. Think it effected me more than I thought. My automatic thing when she started telling me about the 'my brother is pregnant, it wasn't planned etc' story was oh for gods sake - STOP TELLING ME!! and then i felt awful afterwards for thinking that. MIL was round just before xmas tho and knows everything that we have been through but still proceeded to tell me so many stories about colleagues who were pregnant, friends who had just become grandmothers, obscure cousins who were pregnant etc etc etc. Think she thought I would be pleased to hear news of babies?!?!? I think in so many ways I'd just rather pregnant people sort of didn't exist until I was pregnant too :o:o:o (no offence to any graduates reading. I'm just well jel thats all :o:o)

I know what you mean and sorry for going off on one. Its just that we've been ttc for so long and I know things go wrong but I can't go into this thinking that when I eventually get my BFP, it will all go wrong. I know it might but if I think that I will lose it then what's the point? I have a friend who got pg after a miscarriage and she panicked all the way through. Every pain, every twinge, everything really, she was properly panicking. I think she had the GP, EPU and in later stages the labour ward on speed dial she phoned so many times. If I ever manage to get there, it's been such a fight, that I can not spend the next 9 months fighting invisible demons and I do not want to go into this expecting that it will turn out badly. Does that make any sense?

As for pregnant women, feel the same way as you. I find babies easier because when it's born its very clearly not my baby whereas I look at pregnant women and think "why you and not me?".

Code - I completely agree about the positive thinking and you are right, you have to go into a pregnancy thinking it will go as planned. 99.9% of viable pregnancies end well so hold onto that thought :)

But, and I am sure those who have also had things go wrong at a very late stage will agree, awareness is so so so important. I think I've metioned it before, but there is a 'count the kicks' campaign started by one of the charities trying to raise awareness in heavily pregnant women to count atleast 10 movements a day. Health care professionals can not be there 24 hours a day and women need to take responsibility for their pregnancies.

Having said that, if you have never been in the situation I doubt it it something people take notice of. Nobody ever thinks they will be in the 0.1% where it ends badly. I suppose that's just the 'once bitten twice shy' coming out though.
I really like your 'invisible demon's' comment...that sums it up perfectly.

    I 3rd the pregnant women bit :D

ok here's a weird one as we're all starting exercise plans. Is it ok to do strenuous exercise in the 2ww?

Not that I'm trying to get out of i already.
