I have received through the post several times over the last year invitations to join Costco. It is a wholesalers which supplies items in bulk quantities offering big savings at times. If you have a business you can open a trade account and make purchases exempt from VAT - fair enough. If you are an individual of a certain proffession such as a teacher, doctor, accountant, pilot, police etc you can join as an individual and make purchases inclusive of VAT.
My question is why is it that these proffessions - people who are alread well paid - can benefit from this access to bulk purchasing whereas I cannot just because I work in a factory which isn't on the qualifying list of of proffessions. How can they legally discriminate like this?0 -
Hi everyone,
Thanks to everyone for your recommendations and ideas. Thanks to this thread, I have bought a few deals today that I thought I'd share in case they help anyone else.
I got:
10kg of broken dishwasher tablets on ebay for £13.49 delivered, 2p per wash!
I also want to get laundry powder from the same guy - 30kg for £27.99 delivered - around 450 washes so 6p per wash. Evenless if I then mix it with soda crystals, which also helps the washing machine run better.
Then I saw 5kg of Basmati rice on Amazon too, for £6 so got that too as it's better quality than cheap rice.
Next on my hit list are toothpaste, loo roll, tinned tuna, tinned tomatoes, Worcester sauce, pasta... as long as the price is lower than Aldi, I will bulk buy! I always check the kg price, so hopefully I won't get stung!:):)

240 PG Tips tea bags for £3 in Iceland. Best before date is late 2014, so got 6 boxes.
My favourite place to stock pile from is Quality Save / Home Bargains. They do things with short expiry dates (1 month to 3 months) at crazily reduced prices. I can remember getting about 30 1.5 litres of strawberry water for 19p per bottle. Also do 6 x Nature Valley Crunch bars for £1 which are normally 75p each at Holland and Barrett!
Also, best to stock pile on sugar/dates/cooking essentials when it's Ramadhan. All Asian/Ethnic stores have a sale on and you can get some right bargains!
Thanks for this thread OP, it's really interesting to see that others stock pile too and it's not just us0 -
You can save a little money by buying fresh produce when it's in season and buy the frozen or canned stuff when it's out of season. When produce is in season, it's very cheap, it tastes better, and is likely to contain less pesticides since it's grown as nature intends.
When the fresh stuff is out of season, it costs significantly more in many instances, and it often tastes pretty bad. That's when you opt for the canned and frozen stuff.
I've been stocking up on fresh white onions that are 4 pounds for $1 USD. Roma tomatoes are 47 cents a pound now. They cost almost triple than than that during the winter.

Costco's so called joining criteria is a big load of BS to make you think their shop is really exclusive and high brow, trust me they will allow anyone employed full time in any job to apply, my OH used to be a bus driver that wasn't on the list and he had no problem joining. As long as its full time work, they don't mind (and yes I vaguely remember friends who work in factories etc being able to join). Then next year they don't even check your payslips etc when renewing your membership so you could even be on the dole then and they'd never know. Its makro that are genuinely really strict on these things. xx0 -
