  • I've always found that cats with a problem have turned out to be the most loving and you definitly get a sense of reward.
I've kept cats in flats, they are pretty easily amused.

  • Can I make a suggestion re the grooming?

Get some treats, whiskers do a good one especially to help with cats who are prone to fur balls, give him one or two so he tastes how good they are and then: run a soft brush along the length of him followed by a softly spoken "you are such a good boy" and a sweetie.....repetition......repetition...repetition.

Although not blind, my furry girl had been used as a football prior to us loving her. She was afraid of everything. I made a place for her to have as her space, and every night before I went up to bed, I would sit next to her and stroke her gently (she was terrified of being touched as before touching always meant pain), and I would also speak to her in a very calm and quiet voice always ending with a sweetie. After about three months, she associated sweeties with hands which made hands good!

She has been with us for six years now and has trained us very well!:rotfl:

She sleeps on our bed, actually we sleep on the edge and Her Majesty has 3/4 of it! She drinks from a glass, won't use a bowl. Has more toys than enough but still loves when hubby throws a screwed up piece of paper for her. And ADORES the Sainsburys delivery men as they are "sweetie" men, and they always make a fuss of her. :)

She is a complete and utter joy and we are incredibly privileged to have her. I adore her to pieces and would gladly disembowel the people who were cruel to her. Makes my heart break that anyone could hurt my precious girl.

Hope you find as much joy from your boy.

  • I had a long haired cat who was scared of the palm of your hand, I dont know what his past wa,. it took a good while for him to trust me but he never would tolerate being brushed ever. the best I could manage was a wet through with my hands and then I'd just cut off any tats.
I miss him talking about him now, he was really old when he died though of a nasal tumour, so whatever happened in his first half of his life I think he had a really good second half at least.

    update 26/11/2013

Sadly Rupert has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in his remaining thyroid gland, and this has been masking stage two chronic kidney disease which is showing more and more as the thyroid medication kicks in. This has been ongoing for about a month and the official diagnosis confirmed today by the vet was not that surprising after two vet visits, but for some reason tonight I've been really really tearful and worried about him and how we are both going to cope.

  • You will both cope fine don't worry. Listen, Rupert has now found his perfect home and don't think for one minute he'll let any infections/illnesses get in the way of spending the rest of his life with you.

Cats are not stupid and he knows he is now where he should always be with loving people who care deeply and show him love and affection unconditionally and he will give the same back.

You're a team now so be strong for Rupert and he will be strong for you.

    Update 07/02/214

Rupert was put to sleep today, he was not responding to the thyroid treatment and had lost a lot of weight.

He had a big dip last Sunday, and the vet told me it was only a matter of time and to treat him like a King in the meantime. He rallied in the week but last night he could not keep food down and was struggling to do his business, and from 1.30 today was struggling really badly and loosing his footing in the litter tray and crying.

The vet saw him at 3.45 and said that it was not constipation as I had thought, he was simply too weak to poo and that whilst there were things that could be done, it was only delaying the inevitable.

So, the decision was made to let him go and I held him and sang to him whilst the vet administered the injection, and waited for his heart to stop.

It's so strange to sit here in my little flat and not have him beside me, and I feel so guilty - all the things I should have done better, quicker. I never noticed the weight loss, such a skinny old boot that he was. I should have gotten him to eat his pills, I should have taken him to the vet sooner, I should have done so much that could have made all the difference. I blame myself for not being the owner he deserved.

From the 12 August 2012 to the 7 Feb 2014, he was my baby and my grumpy old boot, and now he is gone.
