  • Perilously close to my target spend with a week to go for me, after a big stock up shop at Mr T to use up big discount vouchers. But I'm well and truly stocked up and will only need fruit veg and milk so I think we'll be OK.
  • liz-paul we don't have toad in the hole that much, but i normally serve with onions and gravy, with swede and carrot mash. I love the idea of cutting the sausages lengthways.

EDIT The swede and carrot mash is just that, swede & carrot mashed.
  • Thanks - think I'm going to do corn on the cob and some potatoes with it. Also got a small portion of leftover chilli in case needs OH needs some meat!!!

Hi folks - just wondering what you all serve with toad in the hole? I think I'm gonna make that tonight to use up my batter from last night but I only have 8 sausages between 4 of us which will make a fairly small toad in the hole... I normally just serve veg with but I think I need something else particularly for OH as the sausages are veggie ones and so 'not a proper dinner'!!!! :wall: The kids will be fine with 2 sausages but what can I give OH? Is it weird to serve potatoes or chips when it already has batter?
my OH has Mash and lots of gravy and only a bit of mixed veg (i think He thinks he is alergic to green he just doesn't do it or eat it.) just like a child

  • A small Tesco spend for me today. £3.43 on milk, cheese and a baking potato! Cheese seemed expensive and I got the cheapest, smallest block I could find of mature cheddar, and it was still £2.39.
Because it's fun to have money!

Hello all! Think it's time for me to get back on the GC wagon, things have got really disorganised over the summer with shopping and mealplanning, and if I'm going to afford xmas and keep putting away money for the house deposit, I need to be more disciplined.

So tonight's tea is going to be spaghetti with the leftover sauce from yesterday, and I was thinking of a courgette side dish to go with it (8 for £1 on the market!). What's a nice, simple way to serve them that will go well with a vaguely Italian main dish?

Welcome back from your holiday NickJW.

I've nearly finished the month and it's just as well as I'm £45 over my £300 budget . Not quite sure where we went wrong but never mind, I'm determined to do better next month. Will post final amount on Saturday just in case we need emergency food between now and then.

Another suggestion is to mix in some dry stuffing mix which bulks up the toad. I must admit it is too filling for me but so is two big sausages with mash and veg! If it were just for OH you could mix a small amount with boiling water and make stuffing disks to put in the bit he's going to eat. My Mum used to put kidney in for my Dad...

You could cut them into smallish pieces (1cm cubes) and toss them in oil, salt and fresh ground black pepper then roast these for about ten-fifteen minutes then sprinkle on grated cheese and bung them back in until they bubble.
