I followed your link, and then the link to the actual study....

At the end of the study there is one comment that I found VERY astute and pertinent...

Pretty much like saying or suggesting that using people on the SAD way of eating in any study relating to health/longevity/whatever are going to give one the gold standard or even believable results in any of these areas, and so these results are suspicious and questionable to say the least!!! Just my opinion. of course :)

And one you're perfectly entitled to of course. Interesting find! I didn't actually comment on the article, just provided a link to it as I thought people here might be interested in it. I'll check out the actual study when I get a bit more time, thanks :D

Really? You found this astute and pertinent?
What makes up the rest of the diet? (56.9+ 17.3+5 doesn't make 100!!)
How on earth could this be typical of the American diet? 5% fat? By weight or calorie? Hmmm...I don't think so.

  • Unexpected positive side effect...had breakfast this morning, then walked off this morning without my lunch or wallet (left them together so wouldn't forget either, of course). Managed to survive fine all day without eating - having dinner in an hour or so. Would have chewed the leg off the table and been really cranky if I'd missed lunch only a couple of weeks ago.

  • Have a week off work so usually wouldn't fast as I thought having an accessible kitchen would be too much encouragement BUT I got caught up doing dog stuff & before I knew it it was midday & hadn't got around to brekkie, before this used to be my favourite meal of the day. So just carried on & finally had my dinner around 6pm, so that was a 22 hour fast. It's quite liberating not stopping chores to have lunch etc - hubby is off towards end of week so I'll only do a 6:1 this week as we'll go walking & pub lunching, so seeing as I wasn't planning on any fasting today has been a bonus - next goal 10 & a half stone!!

YES I found the comment both astute and pertinent!!!!

    http://www.thefreedictionary.com/pertinent
    pertinent
    adjective:
Having logical precise relevance to the matter at hand.
relevant, fitting, fit, material, appropriate, pat, suitable, proper, to the point, apt, applicable, apposite, apropos, admissible, germane, to the purpose

    http://www.thefreedictionary.com/astute
    astute
    adjective:
having insight or acumen; perceptive; shrewd
[from Latin astūtus cunning, from astus (n) cleverness]
intelligent, politic, bright, sharp, keen, calculating, clever, subtle, penetrating, knowing, shrewd, cunning, discerning, sly, on the ball (informal), canny, perceptive, wily, crafty, artful, insightful, foxy, adroit, sagacious

Do you think that Rhesus monkeys eating SAD, whatever the proportions of Carbs, Protein or Fat are, can give a TRUE picture as to whether these primates' lives could be extended or not by doing CR yet eating foods that are not their usual/normal dietry foods?

My point is that using any form of SAD....even with CR....no matter what the macro %ages are...... is TOTALLY irrelevant as to whether the Rhesus monkeys lives were extended or not. The very fact that they were NOT...as the commenter pointed out...fed THEIR normal, natural diet discredits the study results!!!! If they had been fed a diet based on the NATURAL foods that Rhesus monkeys would eat in the wild, then, IMHO, the study results would be valid...whether that was life exstension or not!!!

I don't know what SAD is and I really can't see how anyone can deduce that their diet replicated the standard maerican diet based on meaningless %. So no, I wouldn't call this comment either astute nor pertinent, and I don't need you to tell me what either means.

But the quote said they were fed a "natural ingredient diet".
Don't they eat natural ingredients in the wild?

  • My dad has been doing this diet and has had alot of success with it. I myself have tried a 3:4 diet and managed to lose 6 lbs in 3 days and even kept it off!

Only problem was lack of enjoy though but I will definitely be trying it again soon!

As I said in my initial post, this is MY opinion! You are entitled to yours! I really can't be bothered to argue and split hairs with you over this any further, so we'll just leave it at that, if that's OK with you!:)

Well, since you refuse to explain how a "natural ingredient diet" with a given breakdown can be labelled as the standard american diet, then I can't see what there is to discuss either.
I'm all for forming opinions based on facts, not baseless assumptions.

  • I'm now on my 5th week and 5lb down which I'm really happy with. had my 1st fast day of the week yesterday and I must admit I could have chewed off my arm last night. so I had a rivita with the thinest scraping of marg and went to bed. How ever today I've had a funny taste in my mouth and felt a bit sick allday and have just wanted to eat! I havn't eaten more than usual though. Do u know if ketosis kicks in when you fast as I was thinking I feel a bit like I did when I had morning sickness!!!!!

The 2 day diet was in Women's own mag this week with a few sugestions of splitting the 500 cals, so I'm going to try boiled egg and soilders (ww bread) for breakfast tomorrow then just have my tin of tomotoe soup at tea time and hope I feel better!
