... I weighed over 12 st 18 months ago before they decided the big H was the way to go (sorry guys). ...

    the big H..?
I wondered if google could help and it came up with a youtube video about 'the big H' and 'how to HANDLE it'....... Is that it..? <confused smiley>

I've done a couple of 'fast' days over the last week, which I'm calling 'liquid days' since my little rule has been that if I can drink any liquid. I made a spicy carrot and leek soup with veg. that needed using up the other day and that really helped me through. My work trousers aren't threatening to cut me in half now, so I think it's helping. I hope to have 1-4 'proper' fast days a month in the future, but for now this is helping me cut the 'badness' that I've fallen into over the last couple of months.
  • I think Sunday was a bad day as my "fast" day. Thought it would be fine as it'll be spent on the sofa, but studying is hungrier work than anticipated. Spent 250 cals on a huge salad with dressing, and have mushroom soup for later. Drinking lots of herbal tea as well.

Moving onto more Tuesdays and Thursdays next week. At least then I'll have class to distract me :)

I thought IF was more to do with living healthier? No-one's mentioned living longer. I know I'd rather live a healthy average age life than struggle on into my 100's!

If I recall the Horizon programme, it's primary aims were to look at extending life by reducing levels of IGF-1 thus switching on DNA repair genes and they were looking particularly at the Indian guy who was still running marathons aged 100+. The fact Moseley experienced weight loss and lower BP and cholesterol during the experiment was a bonus but no long term studies have been done into the sustainability or efficacy of intermittent fasting on these factors.

I think ( or at least hope:D) that it's living in a good state of health longer, so in theory, the best option.
Ok. Just read the link to the new story. I'll settle with the option of losing weight and feeling good.:D

I followed your link, and then the link to the actual study....

    http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v489/n7415/full/nature11432.html

At the end of the study there is one comment that I found VERY astute and pertinent...
William Wilson said: Apparently the monkeys were fed "a natural ingredient diet containing 56.9% carbohydrate, 17.3% protein and 5% fat". Essentially this duplicates the typical American diet loaded with processed foods and added sugars. We now know that this diet is highly toxic to humans and it is driving our current epidemic of insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and obesity. It also appears to be triggering a type of food-induced brain dysfunction called CARB syndrome. Because both groups of monkeys were eating a toxic, unnatural diet, I think it's difficult to come to a meaningful conclusion about the role of calorie restriction in health and longevity based on this study.

Rhesus monkeys are like us--they are omnivores. If you feed them monkey chow they get sick like us. Our government now recommends a high carbohydrate, low fat diet loaded with whole grains. In other words they want us to eat monkey chow!
Pretty much like saying or suggesting that using people on the SAD way of eating in any study relating to health/longevity/whatever are going to give one the gold standard or even believable results in any of these areas, and so these results are suspicious and questionable to say the least!!! Just my opinion. of course :)
