Thanks Tesuhoha
I don't have any scales so try and remember to weigh myself when I go to the gym. Perhaps I should buy some but I don't want to get obsessive!
Don't bother buying scales otherwise you will become obsessive
Go by how your body looks and how your clothes fit“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

I agree but if you have them already its difficult to avoid the temptation. I have been weighing myself weekly just to keep a record but I don't lose weight every week.The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -

I have been weighing myself weekly just to keep a record but I don't lose weight every week.2nd week & 2nd fast day of the week tomorrow and looking forward to it, I have a busy day so hopefully won't have too much time to think about food. got my fruit salad and my tin of soup, a bottle of perrier water and a lemon! also been to jazzersize class twice this week and have noticed I have a lot more energy.:jHOW MUCH ?0

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this effectively an elaborate calorie control diet?
I mean the way it works is simply that you are cutting your weekly calorie intake by 29%.
I can see that psychologically it's easier to miss two whole days rather than cut food intake by a third every day, but isn't that in effect what's happening?0 -

Yes. Except that it really isn't very elaborate. The beauty of it is its simplicity.0 -

I don't think it's quite so simple;if you go on a calorie restricted diet every day for extended periods, your body adjusts and often becomes more efficient.
Hopefully, on the fasting diet, the patterns aren't something your body an handle so well and hence the metabolism doesn't drop. Well, at least I hope so.
Plus, because the rest of the time is normal, you don't get the same guilt for eating normally when you do.I lost my job as a cricket commentator for saying “I don’t want to bore you with the details”.Milton Jones0 -
I don't think it's quite so simple;
I agree with what you say but there is nothing complicated or mysterious about it. You are losing weight because you are eating less. The beauty of it is that by only restricting calories for only one, or two days at a time, your body never realises what is going on so it doesn't reduce its metabolic rate, unlike other calorie control diets.0 -
Actually the main reason that some people are doing this is that apart from losing weight there are other health benefits. For me it's reducing the likelihood of becoming diabetic, something to do with the effect on a particular hormone, and lowering BP.CCs @0% £24k Dec 05 £19,621.41 Au £13400 S 12600 Oct £11,981 £9481 £7500 Nov £7250 D £7100 Jan 6950 F £5800 Mar£5400 May £4830 June £4660 July £4460 Aug £3200, S £900, £0 18/9/07 DFW Nerd 0420

While weightloss is obviously a factor, and the prime motivation of a lot of posters, the Horizon program also went into the dramatic effect that IF has on IGF-1 and the resultant health benefits. So it's not quite as simple as just a weightloss strategy.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Indeed, but my response to davehills was from the weight loss perspective.
I'm not sure if this link has been posted before but it may be of interest to those interested in the nitty gritty...
