Hi there
I'd vaguely heard of something to do with the 5:2 diet, but as I never saw the Horizon programme and had other stuff going on in my life, I never really looked into it. Now I'd like to shift some weight before Christmas and although I've joined a gym, I'm not sure this alone will get me where I want to be. I found the Horizon programme online this week and watched it. Very interesting. I'm thinking of giving it a go, but I have a few questions:
1. Is it worth buying the book? The programme seemed to explain it pretty well, so I'm tempted not to bother.
2. What/when do you eat on fast days?
3. Do you find it difficult to concentrate on fast days?
4. Can you sleep ok after a fast day, or is it difficult because you're hungry?
I rarely eat breakfast during the week as it stands, so I think the mornings on a fast day would be fine. My main concern is getting through the afternoons/evenings. If I'm hungry I struggle to sleep so I'm a bit concerned about that and if I'll be able to concentrate at work in the afternoons.
Thanks

Hello and welcome Gwen80
1. No it's not necesssary to buy the book. Much of the same information contained in it is on this and his own forum http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/
2. Some people skip food all day and have their 500/600 calories in the evening; others might skip breakfast or lunch and have a smaller evening meal and others have 3 small meals. Drink plenty of calorie free drinks or count the calories from your allowance if you have milk etc.
3. No I don't. It can be difficult at first til you get used to it. The only thing I found at first was that I felt cold. After a couple of weeks your body seems to get used to it.
4. I find I sleep better these days.
Remember to take your measurements regularly and especially before you start. This diet isn't only about the weight loss, some times the scales don't move but the fat does!Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0 -
Hi everyone,
I've been following this thread for a few days and as I'm planning to [STRIKE]start [/STRIKE] re- startthe 5:2 as of tomorrow, I'm hoping you'll let me join you ?
I've been a member of MSE for a while and during my time spent lurking on the DFW board I managed to clear over £9,000 worth of credit card debt and also quit smoking
So 3 years on; still debt and smoke free but about 25lbs over weight and in need of somewhere to report to !
I did start this a few months back and quickly lost about 9lbs and felt the difference in my clothes, but eventually lost the momentum and yes, regained all the weight.
Looking forward to getting to know everyone

Thankyou spiritI'm going to give this a go. I just need to think through my plan regarding what/when to eat on a fast day. I'm thinking of getting some cup-a-soups in - they might be handy for lunch.
I had a healthcheck as part of my gym induction and I was quite concerned about my results. I've never been one to put on weight around my middle, but over the last couple of years a definite 'roll' has appeared. I'm hoping combining this diet with some work at the gym will produce results.
Thanks

Well done A, on quitting smoking and the debt-busting. Hopefully there'll be a bit less of both us by Christmas!Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending0 -

Hi Gwen :hello:
Personally I've still never watched the Horizon programme. I decided to try it after reading about it in the Daily Mirror. Didn't think I could do it but thought it was worth a shot.
1. I've never bought the book either and now I don't see any point. I joined this thread and read what people had to say and have read up on it online and just went from there.
2. I work shifts so my eating plans change from week to week. One week I eat in the evening, the next I eat around mid-day. I take some stuff to work with me, often a bit of fruit or some cherry tomatoes but on fast days generally 350-400cals are used in the one meal. The meals change depending on what I fancy, I could be here all day listing what I eat.
3. I think at first I probably did feel sluggish and find it hard to concentrate at times but then I got used to it and I don't see any side affects any more.
4. My sleeping seems to have got better lately. I don't know if it's to do with the diet or not but I've been getting more sleep and I feel better for it.
I think like anything if you try it for long enough it just becomes second nature. We all still have days where we start fasting but give up for one reason or another. It's not always easy, but it's not always hard, either.
I know it doesn't work for everyone but it's certainly worth a try. Good luck anyway! We're all here when you want to talk0 -

Thanks 1940sGal :-) I like the sound of it as I really can't be faffed with counting calories/points etc every day. I like the simplicity of it. To be fair there are days when I don't eat until 4pm and don't notice, but then others when I'm ravenous at 10am. I'll give it a go and see how it goes.

I'm the same. I honestly don't know how people can stand counting the calories or points of every little thing they put in their mouth every day without being driven insane. It's why this plan works for me. 2 days that's all. It's easy
I know what you mean too, with food. There are times after a fast day where all I want to do is eat eat eat and others where I have to make myself eat something0
