How often does everyone get weighed? My friend says it should only be once a month ( he lost 6 stone + in a year).

I weigh myself once monthly which includes measuring fat and muscle mass, bone density and water as these are important indicators of how/why my weight has changed over the month. You can still have fat loss even if weight increases ;)

Most importantly you need to be measuring yourself, especially around the waist. I do this weekly and also monitor how my clothes feel by trying on a pair of jeans or fitted trousers/skirt as it's often difficult to notice a slight gain when constantly wearing loose/elasticated gym clothes and casual wear.

    Thanks Pink Petal

Was itching to get on scales this morning but didn't. I feel excited as this diet seems realistic. What does everyone do when they are on holiday. ? I have a holiday booked for a week in September I can still do 5:2 but does anyone have a break then return to it when they are home? x

I'd just have a break on holiday to be honest! I'm not going away til October and will (hopefully) be at target by then but I think you should just go and enjoy yourself and not think about it too much. The chances are you'll still make sensible choices anyway as you won't want to do too much damage!

Thank you everyone for the advice. What is the 30 day shred?

Going to have another fast day tomorrow as I have another long shift at work. Its easier at work as there is no staff canteen or shops nearby so you can only eat what you take in.

    The 30 day shred workout http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jillian-Michaels-Day-Shred-DVD/dp/B002RNOS2Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1376999475&sr=8-1&keywords=30+day+shred. It's a killer.:D

The workouts are really short, 20 minutes for 30 days I think, but they're tough, and pretty effective too.

I did this a couple of years ago, it's a great workout, but I won't be joining you this time, too scared :D

In the programme the Men Who Made Us Thin the conclusion was that exercise is very good for the health but it is not an effective weight loss tool as you have to do intensive amounts of exercise every week to lose even a limited number of calories. So by all means exercise but do not expect to slim down that way.

It was first introduced as a weight loss method when it was noted that fatter people were less active but now the conclusion is that they were less active because they weighed more in the first place and not the other way around.

Not strictly true and the programme was very misleading. Whilst spending hours on a running machine or exercise bike won't have much of an impact on weight loss, lifting weights and high intensity training will certainly help boost fat loss. Any exercise which encourages lean muscle gain will boost metabolism and burn fat much more efficiently.

I think I've said before that to lose weight effectively it's 80% diet and 20% exercise but certainly the type of exercise you do plays a key role too.

    Hi all.
Decided to come back, have added the trolls to my ignore list, thanks to the people who PMd to tell me you can do that :)
I missed catching up on how everyone's doing :(
Reached my goal weight of 55kg last week so I'm trying out the 6:1 maintenance now. Weirdly, it actually feels a bit scary dropping 1 fast day!
Anyone else doing 6:1? Any advice you'd give?
Keep up the good work everyone :)

I decided to try the 5:2 after my sister lost weight with it at the start of the year. I have been gaining weight alarmingly, about 10 pounds over the last year and realise that if I continue like that none of my clothes are going to fit me! I bought a lot of quite expensive hillwalking gear last winter and I need to be able to fit into them again this winter!

I was a bit scared about cutting down to only 500 calories in a day. I tend to snack a lot normally and was worried I might pass out if I go a while between snacks :D. I started 5:2 six weeks ago and have found the fast days quite difficult but have managed to stick with it. I usually only drink tea at breakfast and lunch then have a 400 calorie evening meal and some melon or grapes before bed.

The only problem I have found is that I wake up very early the next morning (about 5am) and get up and have breakfast as I am so hungry. I eat normally for the rest of the day after that though. So far I am very happy with the results - 6 pounds lost in 6 weeks - and will probably switch to 6:1 after I have lost another 6 pounds.

Glad you are back :), not quite there yet myself but have read that some people alternate a 6:1 then a 5:2 every other week. I know what you mean about it being scary to drop a fast day
Following horizon 5-2 started 28/01/13 target where I am now ish :)
Maintaining now as DW doesn't want my legs to get any skinnier :D
    Total Loss=41.6lb
