5:2 diet

That is true, everyone reacts differently for diets and, if it works for you, all the better!
I'm a scientist too but I study shellfish not people lol! I do think that in general, the calories in-calories out general advice seems to work (anecdotally) whether that be cutting back calories every day or only on certain days.
OT but one of my "real scientist" mates was employed on a survey once to measure pollution in shellfish in the Firth of Clyde (this involved grinding them up in a blender then analysing them). Also I am saddened by the news the Marine Biological Station and exhibition at Millport on the Great Cumbrae is in danger of closing after being on the island in one form or another since 1885.The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Hello everyone
I've been reading this thread with interest over the last few days and I think I'm going to bite the bullet and join you if I may? A friend has had success with it too. I'd like to lose about 12lbs to get below 9 stone - maybe as low as 8 1/2 stone I'm not sure yet. Really I'd just like to lose the 'belly' and be comfortable in size 10 jeans again
Also I was interested in the health benefits that the Horizon program mentioned, they seem almost too good to be true!
I used MyFitnessPal last year when I tried Curves and found it very useful so I've started it up again.
I'm not very well at the moment so I'm struggling to eat properly as I feel nauseous, so I've managed about 1200 calories a day for the last 3 days. I'm worried I'll go into starvation mode if I keep this up so really I'd like to have a couple of days of 'proper' eating before my first fast. Does that sound sensible?
Also I have ibs so I'll need to be careful about my fruit intake, and I've always suffered with low blood sugar (I get sick & dizzy if I don't eat often) so I might not manage this. We'll see. I guess it's a trial & error process?

Can I join you all  I've read most of this thread. I've been doing a 24 hrs two day's a week fast, going from 7pm day before fast day to fast morning I have breakfast of 150 Cal's lunch about 12-PM of 300 Cal's then nothing till 12-30 pm on feast day. So I'm having 500 Cal's in 36 hrs but doing a 24 hr fast. I hope you can understand this
. Am I doing this right.:( Thanks.

Fasting today as GF got a last minute shift for today and I find it easier when I am on my own in the house.

Definitely up your calories on your feast days; the beauty of the "diet" is that it doesn't slow down your metabolism by switching.

Hi, well after 8 weeks and 8 lb loss, I put a lb on for the first time, all because of cakes!! I had a meal out on Saturday and a pastry in the evening. Then 2 pastries on Sunday and a large chunk of cake yesterday:eek: however the only meal I had at the end of the day is usually with salad or veg, no bread or potatoes. All because of a couple of cakes, which were given to me, I have a gain! That is why I only buy yogurts, cos I eat them if they are in the house. And I don't even like sweet stuff:o sorry for the rant folks, but I think the point is this, I only need to lose another 4-5 lbs to be on target and must not go above 1200calls a day on feast day to be able to achieve it. Feast day I think not!!! It just goes to prove we are all different and if I want to lose weight I must cut the rubbish out. One of the pastries on Sunday was for lunch too, not even extra!0

I doubt very much you gained 1lb of fat just through eating a couple cakes. More likely to be water gain. Where are you in your monthly cycle? You can gain as much as 5lb when pre-menstrual.
Also, restricting to 1200 calories a day on what you call a 'feast' day is far too low, especially if you're severely restricting to 500cals twice weekly too.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
Hello everyone!
Im a long time lurker on this thread and first things first well done everyone on your losses!
I started that 5:2 back in January and lost about 10 pounds ish I think but lost it a bit and started to pig out too much on my non-fast days so gave myself a 2 week break and resolved to start properly again last week. But I only managed one fast day last week and I have just broken my fast day today by eating a load of biscuits (In work, bored and STARVING!!!)
Any tips for getting my motivation back?? I'm feeling a bit disheartened by it all to be honest! I know 5:2 can work and did enjoy it but I can't seem to get back on track!!0 -
been doing the alternate day fasting diet since January 6th - had a couple of weeks off in April for Holiday and have had a few weekends where i haven't bothered ..today saw me weighed at the gym and i have lost 5 stone now....70.4lbs...I have tried every diet under the sun before and always gave in or got bored..the motivation now from seeing so much weight go is immense...the joy of buying clothes from a normal range in store again after years of buying online only...as i say i fast every other day rather than twice a week so sometimes 3 days sometimes four - but i have never really caved in on a fast day - sometimes i go over the 600 calories by the odd hundred but its usually for something healthy such as fruit...i keep a food diary of everything i eat along with the calories i use the myfitness pal website and app...on a normal day i still restrict my calories slightly - to the equivalent of whats necessary to lose 1-2lb per week...go for it - i can vouch it works0
