Though I point out they have the same degree as a B.Sc. in sport science has.
Ahhh so they regard themselves as "proper" scientists then. That figures
Bit like the difference between a mathematician and statistician
Ooops we seem to have gone rather off-topic here. Apologies everyone. As you were“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
Yes indeed. Total Daily Energy Expenditure. TDEE calculators on the web will give your calorie need for the feed(feast) day. Do 3 different ones and take an average to use. Eat 25% of your TDEE on fast days. I have found not eating from 7pm on the evening before my fast day, continuing for 24 hours until 7pm on fast day, gives an effective fast. I drink water and non-calorie herb teas through the day to keep hydrated. Once my dinner of tuna and salad is eaten I eat nothing else until breakfast after 7am the next day. I eat a probiotic non-sugar yogurt for breakfast. I lose about 1 kg doing this on Mondays and Thursdays only.
Try not to over-think it.

It sounds like another fad diet to me. I'd like to see the results of proper medical long-term clinical trials (not just one or two short-term ones then a documentary proclaiming the amazing, life-changing benefits!! like most of the medical rubbish that appears on the TV).
Call me skeptical but it just sounds like a simple calorie reduction diet to me (albeit on 2 days a week rather than 7).
However, human metabolism is such a complex subject that calling this a calorie reduction diet is an over simplification.
I am a scientist,, ( well, maybe not according to some of the definitions floating about here, but just been invited to talk at a school to attract girls in physics...) and I don't wear a white coat... and I am one of the first to admit that despite being very well informed, I couldn't offer you an explanation of why this diet is different and why it appears to work for so many people (but not all).
(my biochemistry course was a long time ago... I mostly remember that it was very complicated and that the human body is amazing machine).
All I know is that this way of life works very well for me; I am the leanest I have been for a very long time, full of energy and as I mentioned before, some of the results that came out of a mini health check were better than they have been over the last 10 years. I haven't radically changed what I eat... mostly changed the pattern of when I eat.
And judging by the number of people who have asked me how I managed to look so well, intending to follow suit, I think you'll find plenty are prepared to give it a go.I lost my job as a cricket commentator for saying “I don’t want to bore you with the details”.Milton Jones0 -

Still fasting regularly here and I've lost about 12 pounds - I think. Feel leaner and better and much more in control of what I'm eating.
I've stopped doing 5:2 - instead I fast (500 cals) one day a week, and one day I fast until tea time and have a normal meal, rather than a fasting one. Seems to suit me."Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."0 -
I've decided to join to see what all the fuss is about. Seriously, a couple of my friends have been saying how amazing it is and how much energy they have. I've read the book and feel it could really delivery what I need, not to mention the happy side effect of weight loss. So today is my first day. My house is prepared as is my fridge. My fast day menu is displayed which I hope has the right balance of veg v protein. So far so good, drank plenty of water but I am feeling hungry! Wish me luck.0

But I don't mind as I really don't find the 5:2 taxing in any way.
Very MSE too..., fasting is good for my pocket:rotfl: (until I go shopping for new clothes that is...)I lost my job as a cricket commentator for saying “I don’t want to bore you with the details”.Milton Jones0 -
